Throwing up over studying seems undesirable to me... I'm guessing Phead was greatly exaggerating his claims. Going to a tough school does prepare you very well though for what is ahead.

if jhu is so much better than duke then why is duke ranked far higher than jhu as one of the top 10 schools in the nation? consistently.

Who says JHU is so much better than Duke?

Your argument is incredibly convincing by the way (sarcasm).

Well I can certainly say what I mentioned is a lot more desirable to a vast majority of people than what Phead does. Because everyone wants to throw up over stress? At least recognize what I said is normal
[/quote]

How narrow-minded. Who's to say what "normal" is? And do you have any statistics that support your claim that the "vast majority of people" prefer what you described?

Believe it or not, some students thrive in competitive environments. I don't think everything is stressful at JHU, either--depends on the major.

thank you.

jhu bme is marginally better than duke bme but that's about all jhu has on duke.

Why does this seem like this is leading to another "Duke is the best" arguement?

^touche. let's drop it now before it gets out of hand.

yea, a Duke vs. John Hopkins argument would get pretty ugly...

^Haha, agreed.

US News Rankings don't really show much. For instance, according to US News, Washington U is better than Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Hopkins, Northwestern. . . I mean, seriously? Also, US News ranks UPenn above MIT and Columbia--hah.

uhhh Wash U could be better/peers to Hopkins, Northwestern and Cornell

Penn may be better/peers with Columbia or MIT (if you look outside math/science/egineering)?

Your post didn't really prove anything

Bescraze is lecturing people on how to post substantive responses.

lol, love it.

Bescraze does not look past USNWR

seriously, outside of medicine, for which jhu is better, what is the school known for??? i'm not trying to kick washu, but i've always perceived it as a "regional" school. nu is known for its business, law, engineering program whereas washu could hardly boast strengths in any of these. as far as undergraduate education goes, i'd argue that brown/dartmouth afford students a better one. uchicago/columbia, well they're both academic powerhouses and washu doesn't compare, yet somehow it's close in the rankings...

Brown, of course. It's acceptance rate is too low to be ranked where it is!

Yes. I think University of Chicago is ranked to low, Georgetown to high, Cornell to low, Brown to high, and Vanderbilt to low. Thats just some general examples. Brown man your stupid physco babble is enjoyable, sadly your college preferences are all based on where you went to school, completely unbiased obviously.

I think that most of you are missing the point of this thread. Where certain universities should be ranked, do they deserve their rank, etc is irrelevant. The point of this thread was to see which universities are the most prestigious, not which ones deserve the highest rank.
Berkeley probably is better at engineering than Yale, but is it more prestigious? Hell no.

Ok, some of these rankings are ridiculous. From my personal perspective, here are the top 15 "wow" schools. And no, these aren't ranked by best academics, it is simply the "wow factor." (Live in the northeast).

Harvard

Princeton

MIT

Yale

Stanford

Columbia

Cornell

UPenn

Brown

Dartmouth

Georgetown

Notre Dame (HUGE in the Northeast. Probably due to large Catholic pop.)

Boston College (Insane amount of applicants for the school's caliber. Overrated, but still prestigious).

Amherst

Williams

Believe it or not, almost nobody in the Northeast has even heard of UChicago, UC-Berkeley, Caltech, Michigan, Vanderbilt, or Duke. The only time we hear of schools like these are for sports (Michigan, Duke, etc). If I were to say that I am going to UChicago people up here would say, why pay 45K to go to a state school in Illinois when you could go to UMass for 20K? (Of course UMass isn't even remotely comparable to UChicago). But people here regard any state university as their version of UMass. State schools are barely "average" for people from the Northeast. That's how unrecognized non-Northeast schools are. However, this is not to say that these schools aren't fantastic schools.

And one more thing...when ranking Ivy League schools, there is NO WAY that UPenn, Brown, or even Dartmouth are better then Cornell when it comes to prestige. Considering all of the schools are in the Northeast, this is how Northeasterners look at them. Ivy's should be ranked:

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

Columbia

Cornell

UPenn

Brown

Dartmouth (Brown and Dartmouth are interchangeable).

Totally disagree. In my world (NYC finance) Cornell has the lowest Ivy prestige. Dartmouth, Brown, Penn and Columbia are all about the same. I experienced the same when I was in Boston and DC.

Also disagree with your sentiments on Duke. In my experience its completely on par with the Ivies and above Cornell in terms of "wow" factor.

Agree with Mooseman on Brown and Dartmouth being the least-well known in general.
