I wonder how many of those NMS got merit-based scholarships. I heard USC gives a lot of those.

ok this debate over which schools are better is ridiculous. it's all subjective. it doesn't matter whether you've frickin "heard of" it or not. stop being elitist pricks. in the end, it's how you perform and how you sell yourself. college is all about preference, and i agree that it should be a good "work hard/play hard" four years of your life. i go to nyu now and who the hell hasn't heard of this school? but i met a TAXI CAB DRIVER that went to nyu, and various waitresses and ****. i'm transferring next year, and considering vandy. let me tell you if all you're thinking about is the name of the school, you will be sourly disappointed. look into everything else. some of the most successful people went to the most random schools ever... i was surprised.

If this discussion is so pointless, why did you revive it? It's been dead for months.

Well, I'm from the south (Georgia/Tennessee border), so I may be biased. However here is my ranking:
1. Harvard
2.Princeton
=Yale
=MIT
=Stanford
6. Duke
=Columbia
8. Dartmouth
=U Penn
=Brown
11. Cal Tech
12. Northwestern
13. Johns Hopkins
14. U Chicago
=Washington U in St. Louis
16. Georgetown
=Emory
=Vandy
19. Rice
20. UC-Berkeley
=UVa

A few explanations:
Remember that this is a southern perspective. Duke is VERY highly regarded at my school, and most of the California schools--other than Stanford--aren't very well known (CalTech's lower ranks, and Berkeley's(sp?) low rank). Emory, Vandy, and UVa may be higher than normal, but southerners think very highly of them.

I probably forgot one, but oh well...

...personally, I think this thread is promoting college selection for the wrong reasons...it's one of those extremely subjective threads that doesn't actually serve a purpose...comparing vandy to uchicago? USC to UCLA? I'm still wondering why someone hasn't hit the Harvard vs. Yale yet.

Regardless, I still feel that the "answer" to this thread can be found in the USNWR considering that prestige is so subjective, and that magazine has taken all of that together and put together not a best college list, but a most prestige list

btw, please don't ask me why i'm posting if I'm not really contributing b/c I truly have no idea

hahahaha...

william and mary

First off, I would like to say that U.Chicago is more prestigious than Vanderbilt (in my opinion). This is because although Chicago might be a bit nerdier, no one can deny its excellent programs. Seriously some people choose Chicago over Ivy League schools. I cannot say the same for Vanderbilt (though I'm sure some people reject ivies for it too, just not in the same proportion as Chicago). Besides, if we were looking at girls/social life as prestige, U. Hawaii or UNC would be the most prestigious school.

Anyways here is my list:

Harvard
2.Princeton
=Yale
=MIT
=Stanford

Duke
=Columbia

Dartmouth
=U Penn
=Brown

Cal Tech

Northwestern

Johns Hopkins

U Chicago
=Washington U in St. Louis

Georgetown
=Carnegie Mellon
=Vandy

Rice

UC-Berkeley

All I know . . . .

University of Chicago

Harvard might have the name, but you have to work like crazy to get out of Chicago alive. One can't sit passively at Chicago and get out with a 3.5 GPA.

Uh... if that is your basis for prestige then I guess Harvey Mudd, Carnegie Mellon SCS, and that crazy ass Christian college I cant remember the name of would be #1. They work even harder than U.chicago kids.

down where i live it's

Harvard
Yale
princeton
MIT
Stanford
Duke
Chicago
Vandy
UVA
UNC
Berkeley
Michigan
UPenn
Cornell
Columbia

All this is so subjective. This depends on the industry/area of your future occupation and the region you'll want to work in, as well as---who do you want to impress with your degree? I could show a degree from Juillard to Joe Public, Midwest City, USA, and he wouldn't care less, while a degree from State U might practically make me a bosom sister.

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
Chicago
Berkeley
Penn
Columbia
Duke
Dartmouth
Brown
Northwestern
Cornell
JHU

My son is neither introverted nor nerdy and he just graduated from UChicago last June. A couple of people have said he looks like Ben Affleck. He loved the University and he loved Chicago. He received a BS in mathematics with a concentration in Stats (with many econ classes too!). He had 4 job offers six months before he graduated and took a position at a hedge fund making well over six figures and he lives in NYC with two former UChicago grads who are also doing very well. They have a very active social life on the week-ends in the city. How is that for social skills and use of your academics? Oh..and he got into Vanderbilt too but chose Chicago. However, I think Vanderbilt is an excellent school too! I do believe that UChicago has a more world-renowned reputation, esp. in economics (my son had the author of "Freakonomics" as a professor) and the sciences.

I would actually love love love the social life at Chicago, and I'm completely serious. The bookish/intellectual types are the best. I'd say, in accordance with the type of student body, the schools that I'd rank as the highest would be (in no particular order) Chicago, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, Princeton, Yale. I just really love the intellectual atmosphere at those schools. Luckily, I'm going to Cornell next year, so yay! Anyplace where both Feynman and Sagan taught has got to be ridiculous.

Congratulations oceanborn! I am sure that Cornell will be a great place for you. There were four students from my kids high school that went there this year. They are all smart creative young people who will benefit tremendously from such an intellectual atmosphere. One of them is in the engineering school in physics. He's an unbelievable student. Good luck in your intellectual endeavors!

oceanborn: Did you know that Sagan was a Chicago graduate?

Thank you peacemaker! Mmm the engineering school there is amazing. I'm not planning on going into science, but I absolutely love physics, so I'm really happy to be going to a school with strong science departments. Good luck to your kid!

Idad, I didn't know that, that's awesome! Chicago is such a great school.

SCREW HARVEY MUDD, CAL POMONA, you can't compare Berkeley with Pomona, a damn Cal State.........you retards

Were's talking about pomona COLLEGE you "retard"

Wow, worst post ever. Climb back into your hole in the ground.

Berkeley for U-grad is TOTALLY different from grad. Just like Umich.

If you really want to see overranked colleges, they'd probably be vanderbilt, emory, wustl.
