Its a bit of apples and oranges, e.g. some institutions include their teaching hospitals (JHU) while for others the hospitals are separate institutions (e.g., BWH and MGH are both Harvard affiliated hospitals).
And UW (salmon division) owns UW (cheese division).

^^"And UW (salmon division) owns UW (cheese division)." Ha-ha-ha!

Besides BWH and MGH, there are several other Harvard teaching hospitals (Chlidren's, Dana Farber, etc.) who have grants. If all those numbers were combined, Harvard Medical would be #1.

While Washington leads in NIH funding, Wisconsin leads overall in total research funding so the funding is not so concentrated just in the Medical School.

Plus UW-Madison will not accept funding for secret research,e.g., stuff that can't be published.

^which is irrelevant for NIH-funded projects

It is now required that publications emerging from NIH-supported research be made available to the general public through pubmed. Long overdue.

You're right it is irrelevant but I just felt like saying it.
