Top 3 SUNY Schools

It also depends on the OP's intended major. For pharmacy, architecture, nuclear medical technology and some other majors, Buffalo is it. But for elementary or secondary ed, OP would have to choose another SUNY campus. Buffalo has the dental, medical and law schools if that's a factor. What size campus does OP want? That's another factor.

Binghamton - hard to get into
Geneseo - also hard to get into
Buffalo - not that hard to get into but good rep.
New Paltz - getting really selective! had 17,000 applicants this year for 1,200 or so spots

1)Geneseo
1a)Binghamton
3) Stony
just my take on all this

In response to gomestar's post, I know it's annoying when people refer to your school as a "SUNY" but Cornell does house a SUNY school in agriculture and life sciences so although it has much affiliation with SUNY, it doesn't make it an over all SUNY school. It is still a member of the Ivy league.

Isn't Binghamton basically in the middle of nowhere? (Don't even get me started about Potsdam.)

Binghamton

Geneseo

Stony Brook

I'm a ny resident as well, this is pretty much how most people view the SUNYs i think.

Posting here as a mom of a Long Island HS Junior. Our G dept posts "scattergrams" of student who apply (in a program called Naviance) From our HS, accepted students averages:

Binghamton: 95.36, 1287 Big university 12,000
Geneseo: 94.67, 1276 Smaller LAC 6,000
Stonybrook: 92.14 1198 Kiplinger listed as most unhappy students top ten
New Paltz 90.72 1151 Newsweek listed 25 hottest schools to watch

New Paltz is gaining attention because, as my S GC says, everyone on LI applies to Binghamton. They either want to go, or they are using it as a safety and want to go Ivy. From LI, Geneseo is too far and in the middle of nowhere. Stonybrook is depressing and too close. New Paltz is a cute town and the surroundings are pretty and it is not too far. The school, according to the Newsweek article is always updating itself. Purchase is a conservatory of the arts. Auditions make it seem selective, but it is not strong for the Lib arts. Alot of the SUNY schools are becoming more selective just because the pool of applicants is growing so quickly. They are a good deal, especially in a worsening economy.

FYI - here are the top SUNY's 2007 Admissions data from our HS guidance office (middle 50% SAT M&V)

Geneseo 1250-1390
Binghamton 1190-1360
Stony Brook 1150-1280
Buffalo 1120-1290
Albany 1100-1260
New Paltz 1100-1290

Our HS naviance shows New Paltz way harder to get into than Buff or Albany and maybe even Stony Brook. It's absolutely soared this year bc of Newsweek "hot school" ranking.

Geneseo is the most selective SUNY, but it is always ignored....=_=, why?

Geneseo
Buffalo
Binghamton

When it comes to SUNY, you really have to investigate your potential choice of major. Generally, the university center campuses are fine overall, but the smaller colleges like Geneseo, Oswego and Plattsburgh have individual strengths.

i heard oswego is a major party school
is that true?

Definitely make sure the school you're applying to has the major(s) you're interested in. Mines is only offered at Buffalo.

Anybody here goes to Buffalo or at least know about the school and city? I'd like to ask more....

I'm international student, trying to transfer to SUNY. Which one do you think is the best for Business (Finance) or Economics major, Binghamton/Buffalo??

I'm also interested to Postdam because of the international student scholarship, but is it worth it? How about New Paltz? I'm interested because of the location.

I've also applied to CUNY baruch, but haven't heard anything from them. any suggestion? SO, I'm start getting worried and thinking to apply to SUNY.

thx

Binghamton and Geneseo- this is impossible to determine which one's better because they're essentially the same when it comes to competitiveness of admissions but binghamton is a science school while Geneseo is more artsy and english oriented

Stony Brook

Buffalo is an underrated city in my opinion. While most UB students live in the suburban sprawl of Amherst, a lot choose to live in the city, either in University Heights, North Buffalo/Hertel, Allentown, or the Elmwood Village, which are all pretty dynamic urban areas. The ones that live in the city ten to enjoy their time at UB.
