Top Biochem./Chem. Undergrad schools?

I'm only a freshman in high school, but I have been starting my college search. I am interested in going for a biochemistry or a chemistry major. I don't know exactly what colleges are the best in these majors, but I am very interested in going to UC-Berkeley. If anyone could list the top schools for both majors, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would say you are too young to be doing this yet and will probably change your mind at least 3 times before high school is over. But for what it is worth…

Berkeley is in a league of its own for chemistry. Then it is the typical: Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, rest of ivies, Michigan, Chicago, etc.

If you are looking at schools that are not as difficult to get into: University of Illinois-Urbana Champaigne, University of Wisconsin- Madison, pretty much all of the other UC’s, Penn State, Purdue, and Ohio State are also really good choices.

I will say that I am VERY impressed with Lehigh University’s Chemistry department. I would consider them for Biochemistry, Organic, or Pharmaceutical Chemistry. This is still really early for you, but consider getting some part-time lab experience and see how you like doing real chemistry experiments during some point in high school. I know of two high school students that did this at a local university and it really helped them get a jump-start on their scientific careers.

It’s definitely early and you will probably change your mind multiple times before you actually get to college, but…

Pretty much anywhere that has decent research facilities will be good for undergrad. The only time the school really matters is where you go to graduate school. I’ve seen people from all sorts of podunk colleges that made it into top grad programs because they kept their gpa up and did undergraduate research. If you go to a more well known college for undergrad then your gpa might not have to be as high, but really doesn’t matter.
