SPS accepted 220 students to fill their 145 spots.

Oh, I see. I don't have a calculator with me so I can't figure out their yield. :)

do u guys think that some mod should close this thread? I think this thread does no good other than intensifying the prestige-whoring attitude we see a lot on CC. Not saying anyone's a prestige whore, but i think this thread guides people that way.
p.s Or people could simply let this thread go down the rank and not appear up top again. :)

Olivia - SPS acceptance rate was 22%. Accepting 220 applicants to fill 145 slots, assumes they're anticipating a 66% yield rate, if they don't have to utilize their wait list.

bearcats - to each their own. This is not MY favorite thread, but I don't think we should start dictating which threads get closed and which don't as long as things don't get nasty. IMO, there's a lot worse threads than this one. The majority of posters have stated the correct opinion anyway - the best school is the one that's the right fit for you.

True that nobody should dictate which threads get killed, but there's always the tried-and-true, "Disturbing Nonsequitur" method of killing a thread. Watch and learn...

Okay, in conclusion, I'd like to sum up the foregoing by reminding everyone that I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie and that I was the star of the movie. This really blew my mind, the fact that me, an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome should be the star of a Hollywood movie. I know, I know...you're thinking to yourselves "What could that mean? Am I going crazy or is this just a dream? Now, wait a minute I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere so it's all in my head." And it is. It's all in your head.

Exeter is tied with Exeter for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. ;)

Uh.... no. SPS isn't all that great either. In terms of purely academic program, I have a lot of respect for Andover and Groton. That said, I'm certainly glad I didn't go to either of them.

What?? That made no sense at all.

SPS is a great school. i also think andover exterer groton deerfield there all good schools

Groton, Exeter, Milton, St. Paul's and Andover are the top five academically and have been for decades.

Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Groton, Middlesex, St. Paul's, Milton, Hotchkiss, Choate, Lawrenceville.

I agree with you Jonathan.

Top five (alphabetical order): Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, Milton, St. Paul's.
Next five (alpha): Choate, Groton, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Middlesex.

...and there are around 20 more schools not here that are still great.

Damaris, you CANNOT say this. Look around on this board. You'll see about twenty boarding schools that are amazing and that anyone would like to go to. The only thing that differs between them is their fit. Here- equate this; Do you think that Hotchkiss and DEERFIELD (lowest acceptance rate in all BSes!!) are as good as the five you mentioned? What about Choate? ... you can't generalize things like that. There are plenty of people who would choose those schools over the five you mentioned. There is NO difference academically. Hardly any.

i can't fairly say, but based on my tours/revisits, the average exeter kid seems more stressed from schoolwork.

Stressed as in could you detail a bit more? Unhappy? Distracted?

Olivia what other boarding schools did you visit/consider besides Andover and Choate?

No other schools... won't make that mistake again. ;)

I'm so glad that St. George's isn't on the list. God forbid everyone decides they want to be there. The campus speaks for itself. Academically very challenging, it's no walk in the park. Today I've already heard the University acceptances are "again" rolling in very favorably for 2007. Yet, there she is over looking the Atlantic, next to Newport and everyone keeps talking about Deerfield.

The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of fantastic schools and its great that everyone feels that where they are/went is the best. The shoe fit, count your blessings, life is good.

olivia567: You are right. I used the word "academically" too loosely. One can get a great education at at least 20 schools. What I meant is that Andover, Exeter, Milton, SPS and Groton have the long-standing reputation for being the top five. Think of these schools as the Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and MIT of the prep world. That doesn't mean that Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Middlesex, etc. don't offer a fine education, just as one can't say that Pomona, Duke and Penn don't offer a great education. Deerfield is definitely coming up in the rankings because it has become the school of choice for students in the NY-CT corridor, where a lot of Wall Street money has been made, and more parents can afford boarding school.

Very well stated ops. There are so many wonderful boarding schools with wonderful academics and all the other wonderful things to complement each and every school.Although SGS does not get a lot of play on CC it is a peer school with the one's that do
