How about you edit this post and re post it on this thread with things you have ACTUALLY done?

@ CashCali That’s quite a harsh comment. I just wanted to get advice on my overall progress.

It’s really hard to tell a freshman anything about how they’re doing. Grades are low? “Do better.” Grades are high? “Keep it up.” There is literally nothing else to say because you haven’t done most of the things on which you will be judged.

@bodangles I’m sorry. Here is my progress so far:

(My school does a letter grading system)

Hon. Lit: A
Hon. Bio: A
Geo: A
Alg: C+
Adv Span: B+
Hon. Tech: A+

GPA: 3.8

GOAL: 4.0

You have no GPA, no test scores etc… Many things will change so there is no way to predict your chances. Keep working hard, find a passion in your EC’s and study for the SAT/ACT. At the end of Junior year, come back and post your Stats and you will get more constructive feedback.

@IvyLeagueBound18 I commend you on your dedication to commit yourself to trying to get into very elite colleges, keep up the good work. Might I ask, how did you receive a letter from Stanford U’s President to invite you this summer? Is that in response to the pre-collegiate summer courses? I think when it all boils down, just keep doing the work and hopefully you will get into the right school for you. Sometimes, you have no control over why a decision is made because there are extraordinary applicants all over who may better fit the university. I wouldn’t waste my entire high school experience worrying about doing things to get into a specific college, but creating a passionate dedication to things you most like. Also, I have three kids who thought they knew exactly what they wanted to do in 9th grade, they are Juniors and it has completely changed, so keep an open mind and have great experiences.

Yes you have a chance and you certainly sound like you are making progress. What makes you want to go to Stanford or Harvard or Princeton? What sort of person are you and what do you like? Do you enjoy your sports or drama or student council or honor society or your travel through your awards?

Piece of advice- remove the reference to IQ in Linguistics and English, whatever that is it sounds boastful.

Thanks for providing more info!

Okay here’s what I would say. Looks great except for algebra. I would look at why you ended up with a C+ and improve your study habits accordingly. If you’re aiming for Ivies, there will be a lot of competition–even from people who have never gotten less than an A in their life! However, many colleges like to see “upward trend,” showing that you know how to address slip-ups and learn from them.

But really, more importantly: do the best you can without worrying about colleges for now. There’s no reason to even think about it. Your intended major and intended career and what you want from a school can (and probably will) change in the next THREE years. That’s a long time. So just keep on keepin’ on and do as well as possible, with extracurriculars you enjoy.

Hi, Sophia.

From what I’m seeing (and if these stay true) you’re on a good track. But it’s very hard chancing you because nothing is definite, you have no idea what will happen in the future (in grades, your EC’s, and your future test scores). With test scores-either the ACT or the SAT, although from what I see in math in science vs English, I think the SAT might be more your fit), they’re needed to gauge chances. So until you have a more definite list of class grades and a GPA from your junior year and test scores, it’s really hard to say for certain. So my advice is keep up the good work, study hard, and don’t do EC’s just for the notoriety and bulk they can bring to your applications in senior year, but because you love them. Remember, colleges like seeing commitment, especially to things surrounding your intended major. So bulk up on things you’re passionate about, not things you feel like you need to look good. And good job on Freshman year-it’s a hard transition between middle school and high school. Just do your best, and be yourself. I know this sounds corny, but trust me. I’m sorry you felt offended by the first commenter, but they’re being honest. Again, it’s very hard to ‘judge’ you without concrete results over a few years.

Oh yeah-another thing, either have a tutor for your SAT/ACT or take a prep class-and do this months before your actual test. And take subject tests to! And multiple SAT/ACT’s (or even both).

Good luck with everything and keep reaching for the stars!

You’re amazing-remember that!
