Hi, I’m going to transfer to a CSU as an AA/AS transfer, but I wanted to know what CSU were best for an English major. I was looking into CSULB but I just wanted to know if there are other schools I should be looking at. I’m just looking for a school that would really help me in my career as I would like to go into publishing/editing. I guess a school that will care and not just give me a BA with a bunch of other English majors. I can deal with a school that’s either big like Fullerton or smaller like Humboldt as I don’t really have a preference in that though I’m wondering if that matters in terms of if they will be able to push me and help me develop the skills I need in the future.
You may want to look at the bios of the faculty for each department that interests you. That will help you understand some of the differences between departments. Also, if you are able to visit the campuses, and talk to some English majors, you might get a feel for which one is best for you.
Virtually all of the CSUs have solid English programs. LB and SDSU are both great but can be hard to transfer into unless you are local. Sonoma and Chico have very good programs and are more accessible and more residential - I’d look at both. Honestly though, unless you are really called by Humboldt, Chico or someplace, it probably makes sense to study near where you want to live after you graduate. Internships and access to a local alumni network are a huge asset when you are looking for your first job.
good luck
Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Long Beach, SDSU, Sonoma State and San Jose state are the most often listed as having top English programs.
I agree with @NCalRent that any of the CSU’s will give you a great education but definitely look over the English major curriculum’s for each target school and look at the career opportunities available at and near each school.
