I am about to get my AA, and am looking for a theatre program to get into. My GPA is a 3.2 and I have numerous extra curricular activities at the college. I was very intrested in the SUNY Purchase school, but I was wondering what other schools I would have a shot of getting into. My family lives near Syracuse. How's their program? I want to get into the best possible program I can.

SUNY Purchase offers a superb, very selective BFA program with audition-based admissions. If you are looking for an auditioned BFA program, you will want to apply to a number of schools to increase your chances of acceptance at one of them.

When it comes to acceptance into an auditioned BFA, your GPA is not much of a factor. The audition is everything.

If you are looking for a BA in theatre, you have a much wider range of choices.

Syracuse also offers a very strong program.

If you are looking at SUNY schools, you may also want to look at New Paltz, Oswego, Fredonia, and Buffalo… off the top of my head.

My S has been accepted to the Emerson and CCM BFA acting programs and is waiting to hear from CMU (long-shot with grades). Emerson accepted in during early action audition and CMU on the spot at unifieds. I am concerned that although CCM’s MT program is well regarded, their Drama program may not be and that Emerson won’t be enough acting focused training. Any thoughts.

Are you hoping to find a program you can enter as a junior? It’s my understanding that most if not all of the “top” BFA programs do not accept transfer students, which is not to say there aren’t plenty of excellent programs that might do so.

ANJALU – CMU does not care about your grades at all. It is so often a common misconception because people assume that Acting program applies the same grades standards as other programs at CMU. They do not. It is a long shot for anyone to get in because they take all of about 15 kids. Because you have son, it is a slightly better chance because they take more boys and less boys audition.

NTCorbin – Ithaca is another stronger program right near by. My daughter is applying to both Syracuse and Ithaca. On paper, Ithaca looks like a better program for her but we have not seen either yet – audition on campus at these two schools over the next two weekends.

Anjalu. from what I hear, CMU’s acting program is not as concerned with grades as Emerson, but I could be wrong. Emerson has more liberal arts requirements than many of the programs. To me this is a plus.

Prodesse – I think the way to say it is that they will accept tranfer students but that you won’t get much of any credict for classes taken. You might get to transfer a few gen ed credits but that would be it. In short, it will still more than likely take 4 years to get a degree

^^ActingDad, are you already in Syracuse or are you typing-while-driving? Either way, hope the trip goes well!

ANJALU: You said CMU accepted on the spot at Unified’s, Did you mean CCM?

Oops! Yes CCM - thank you. He is still waiting to hear from CMU and from Syracuse (although he doesn’t seem to be as interested in Syracuse as the others). Minnesota scheduled over him and he couldn’t stay around another 45 minutes for an audition. What does everyone think of Emerson vs. CCM for BFA in acting (already in at both)?
That is good news about CMU not caring so much about grades but, re CMU audition, the woman who he auditioned with asked him which other schools he was auditioning at and upon listing them she said he was on the right track (he left off Julliard at which he did not get a callback and NYU that he decided not to audition for after visiting the campus). I am not sure what to make of the question as it could go either way and I wasn’t in the room.

My son is a Freshman not a transfer student if the question was directed at me.
