We are considering SUNY Purchase and New Paltz for my daughter. Want to add some other SUNYs to the list. Hopefully not too far from NYC.

CUNY Brooklyn has a pretty highly rated BFA Theater program.

SUNY University of Buffalo has a good one as well, but it isn’t very close to NYC.

While it may be well off the radar, SUNY Fredonia has well regarding theater and dance department and BFA programs. They also have a pretty solid faculty.

I think you have the best ones close to NYC. My son goes to New Paltz, so I could answer any questions you might have about that school.

Honestly, if you are looking for a program in the New York State system I would look at Purchase. The level of that program is the compared to CMU, UNCSA, Juilliard, and Rutgers. The program is high selective but, I would say go for it. I hear the faculty is amazing! To have someone like Christopher McCann or Lisa Benavides-Nelson on faculty the students there MUST best at the top of the game.

I would say go to their website and study the faculty and see who and where they studied. Also take a look at their alumni. I would take a tour to the school and try to bump into some of the current acting students and see what they say.

It’s one of the best and the cheapest TOP LEVEL Personal Actor Training Program in the country.

Brooklyn College @ CUNY

SUNY New Paltz has a solid theater program. Its BA with Performance Concentration requires as many credits as most BFA Major programs, so it’s a good choice for those concerned about going to a program without a BFA. It’s near the city, or at least near enough, and there are some trips to the city to see shows. A fee of around 30 dollars will cover travel expenses and a ticket to an off-broadway show.
