My child has received a likely letter from Harvard. Research opportunities, starting as an entering freshman, will be a large part of his decision making process. Any thoughts on a top freshman with stellar research awards already on his resume becoming part of a research team right away? Also, any suggestions on any specific professors?

No specific professors, but one of my neighbours is pretty aggressively pursuing physics research. Encourage your son to take Physics 16 (or higher), and to apply for the independent physics research Freshman Seminar. Aside from that, look into the physics department’s website and look for research opportunities on Harvard’s labs’ websites.

My daughter is a physics concentrator, but entered Harvard without any research experience. All it took was an e-mail over winter break to one professor whose work sounded interesting to her and a short discussion when she went back for her to start working in his research group for Spring semester (and continuing on this year). I would think that with “stellar research awards already” your son should be successful in landing a spot in the Fall semester by reaching out to a few profs (not all will have a spot). Here is the link for looking up the research areas of the profs: [Harvard Physics: Faculty by Research Area](http://www.physics.harvard.edu/research/facresearch.html)

My son is a physics concentrator who has worked with many of the professors in the Experimental High Energy Physics group, and he really likes all of them. Basically, your son should get in touch with professors in different research groups when he gets to school. They are always interested in zealous students.
