Top Schools I should be looking at

I am currently uncertain as to what I want to study as an undergrad, but I am most interested in economics, finance, business, etc. I am mainly wondering if I would be a top-tier candidate for elite schools, (UMich, Berkeley, Duke, etc.) or if I should lower my standards a bit.

Here are my stats:
GPA Unweighted: 4.00 (No Ranking)
GPA Weighted: 4.15
ACT: 31 (35 English 33 Math 29 Reading 28 Science)
Extracurriculars:
Baseball
School Ambassador - Help freshmen, new students. etc.
Volunteer- Helped coach local park district youth sports teams
AP Classes: AP US History (4), AP Macroeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Government
School: Arguably one of top three high schools in Illinois

You have a chance at those schools but I would still consider them reaches. Definitely apply if you love them, it can never hurt, but just add a few more matches/safeties!

I was going to say the same thing - you’ve got a shot, but you’ve got too short a list to apply to just those. A 32 ACT might change things in your favor, a 33 definitely would, but that’s asking a lot. Too bad none of them superscore because you’re one point short of a 32 with rounding.

Consider adding U of Miami, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Texas. You’re from Illinois, it’s got to be your safety and a deal for you.

Another key to the selection of a safety school is what your family can afford. UIUC is pretty expensive, even for IS students. Run the Net Price Calculator on their web site to see if your family has the funds for that.

What is your home state?

UMich and Cal are VERY expensive for OOS students and they don’t give great aid to OOS students.

How much will your parents pay?

A 31 is a good score, but not high enough for a good chance at Duke unless you’re from a state that has few applicants.

To be a “top tier candidate” for a school, your ACT would need to be in the top 15% or so for the school.

82% of Duke’s frosh have an ACT 30+. So, I’d guess that a 31 would be around the 75% mark.

UMich …the top 25% have an ACT 33+

Look up each school’s middle quartiles to see how your 31 falls.
