Chances at top schools.

Can you help me by telling me what schools I am good in, which schools I have a 50 percent chance, and which schools I am close, but not there.

I am a high school junior. I have a 3.6 unweighted, and a 3.66 weighted GPA. I am currently in 3 AP classes and expect A's in them this quarter. I am taking 5 total AP's this year. I took 2 last year. I will be taking 4 next year. I'm hoping to improve my GPA by the end of the year.

On the ACT, I got a 26. I just retook it and I'm expecting a 30-34. 34 if i'm lucky. My guess is a 31. I hopefully will be a National Merit Semifinalist. I find out soon.

I'm in a total of 6 after school activities. Last year, i got 2 first place awards, one at regionals and one at state, in a science olympiad. I play soccer, football, basketball, and tennis, but not for the school. I will probably be a top scorer in the AMC 12 coming up. I have 1 job, and 2 volunteering places with 50+ hours of community service.

Since my class selection was really tough and challenging, (at my school, it is hard to find someone taking more than two AP's a year. The most anyone took by graduation was 8.) Most of my classes are honors, Ap's, or required classes.

Which of these schools do I have a chance at:
Wisconsin Madison, Urbana Chamaign, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Stanford, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Mcgill, Washington St. Louis, and Berkely.

Thanks, i really appreciate your help. For my new ACT, just assume I get a 30 or 31.

I don't mind if you say I will get rejected or not. I like honesty. And if you want, you can name me some schools that I should apply. Oh, and by the way, I like to study biology or math. They are my two strongest subjects at school.

numberone:

UCB: Reach

ok, thanks.

What about the rest of the schools I listed. And also, do I have a chance for any other ivy league not stated above. Give me an idea of where I can get accepted into. Also, if you know if that school wants unweighted or weighted gpa. Honesty please.

Got my Psat scores finally. I got a 225. I should be a semi-finalist. I'm so glad.

will the psat help me now get into the schools that I listed.

Is there anyone else who can give me a hand?

I got my ACT back and it was a 27. I am really disappointed. Does this change my chances for any of the schools listed above. Please, help is appreciated. Please be honest when you post.

Since you did well on the PSAT but your ACT scores aren't meeting your expectations, why don't you take the SAT instead?

What I predict (based on your ACT, not PSAT, scores):
Madison: accepted
Urbana-Champaign: accepted
The rest: rejected

If you take the SAT, I predict you'll have a much better chance at all your schools. However, I would still go for some more safeties and matches. Your list seems really top-heavy.

ok, thanks. My first choice is probably Mcgill because it is the best school that I have a chance of getting in to. What ACT score do you think I need to get in there. Also, what ACT score do I need for the rest I listed.

Are you sure that I have no chance at Mcgill. Last time I checked, my ACT was in the middle and my gpa was good enough for them. Plus my dad went there so there is legacy.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say that I have an 800 on the Math II C sat II. I got that last year. Will that help me at all for any of the schools like mcgill? Do they not care if you have an ACT to fill in for the SAT.

This is the breakdown for my ACT. 36 on math, 23 on reading, 24 on science, and 25 on grammar. My last ACT was 34 on math, 24 on reading, 24 on science, and 21 on grammar.

I'm not saying that you have no chance at McGill, or any of the other universities. However, your ACT scores at McGill reach only the minimum scores that they accept (see http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/usminimumscores/). McGill gets a lot of applicants each year, and unless you can raise your scores or get some other kind of "hook" that will significantly increase your chances, it is unlikely you will get accepted. Your alumni relation might help, but it's more important try to raise your GPA and SAT scores between now and when you apply. Your essay and extracurricular activities are also important, and since you are a junior you still have some time to make changes, so you still have a chance. With many of these top schools it is really hard to tell who is a "shoe-in" and who has absolutely no chance at all, so I cannot definitely tell you one way or the other. Anyway, I wish the best of luck to you when you apply next year!

What are the best schools people from your school get into, and end up attending? What about people like you (as in, if you aren't the top, but about 10% down, or whatever)? How do you relate to other high achievers at your school in past years, and where did they get in?

My class size is huge. 10 or so end up going to ivy league. Many go to stanford, berkeley, and other UC's. These people are all in the top 25th percentile. I fit in the category of top 25th percentile. People similar to me applied to top schools and got in to at least one. Nobody from my school has gone to Mcgill, so it is tough to say what my chances are. Plus, I have dual-citizenship. I am american and canadian. Does that increase my chance at all.

I don't know, but I would imagine it does, just a little. You're in a pretty good position, so just do your best on the apps, pray, and continue doing well in school.

I'm guessing that the amount of reading on the ACT is bringing you down. Did you have trouble finishing the test, aside from the math section?

An 800 SAT Math 2C score is a great asset. A 225 PSAT is roughly equivalent to a 34 ACT. Do you see why people recommend your taking the SAT and not sending your ACT scores?

You have lots of time to decide whether McGill is the school for you. Concentrate on your schoolwork and extracurriculars. Over break, take a look at summer programs which fit with your interests. Good luck!

Ok, thanks for the advice. I finished every section of the ACT on the test. The first time i took it, I didn't finish the reading and the science.
