Hi, I'm planning to apply for my MA next year in Cinematic Studies, variously known as Critical Studies, Film Studies or Media Studies; basically film theory and criticism. I've seen some top ten lists here on FILM SCHOOLS, but most seem to focus on the filmmaking aspects. Can anyone help me put together a list of schools based on the academics of film study over film application? Thanks in advance.

Wisconsin has a great film studies dept.

Uhhhh. USC? I hear it's pretty renown for film studies. Here's are all of the graduate degrees offered in cinematic arts:

School of Cinematic Arts
Cinema-Television (M.A., M.F.A.)
Cinema-Television (Critical Studies) (Ph.D.)
Cinematic Arts (Media Arts and Practices) (Ph.D.*)
Animation and Digital Arts (M.F.A.)
Interactive Media (M.F.A.)
Motion Picture Producing (M.F.A.)
Writing for Screen and Television (M.F.A.)

Liberty Guide

an unofficial list but i think it covers the best...

Thanks, but I already have USC on the list (along with UCLA and Chapman). Thanks for the Liberty Guide link, dncrgrl102. As far as I know Cal Arts and LMU offer film studies as FILMMAKING. I'm hoping to stick primarily to the West Coast, so I'll probably pass on Wisconsin, but thanks, barrons. ^^

High, on another note, my brother is also going for his masters, but an MFA in Creative Writing. Any suggestions? His list right now is composed of Boston U, Emerson and Simmons, Cal Irvine and San Francisco State. His preference, like mine, is to stay on the West Coast, preferably California.

U Washington--excellent.

NYU or Northwestern maybe? and probably CMU

For creative writing, UC Irvine is tops.

For cinema, definitely shoot for USC if you can. Chapman is a good option otherwise.

I'm looking for the best phd program for communication theory or communication studies. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

UCLA, USC, NYU, Emerson, BU, etc.
