Hey all, I’m a thirx-year EECS major at Berkeley. I’m interested in pursuing a graduate degree but my GPA isn’t very pretty (about a 3.2) with a couple C’s in technical classes. Does that all but knock me out of top-tier CS grad programs?
Like top 10, 20? What sort of research do you have? What area of CS? MS or PHD?
Probably the people who might write your letter of rec’s would have some insight for you, and uni/prog suggestions.
Average GPA at the top 4 CS PhD programs is in the neighborhood of 3.8 and the next 10 aren’t that far behind. You need a strong, personal (non-generic) recommendation letter from a famous professor to overcome it. This means being able to do publication-quality work as an undergrad.
If you’re talking MS programs, then yes, you’re probably out. Numbers are the main factor there and the GRE can’t compensate for a 3.2 GPA. Aim outside top 20.
