I hear "top tier" and "2nd tier" all the time in terms of performing arts schools. Is this a subjective thing, or is there a list somewhere? I've seen the "Big List" post but it's tons of school, can't tell what is considered "top tier". Anyone?

There is not a published list of that sort, because it is pretty subjective… I think that many would shy away from listing what they believe to be top or second tier here because it is a big can of worms to open, and generally the discussion does not end well ;)

I think most people rank based on the level of competition to get in (ratio of yield to # of applicants). But high competition to get admitted does not mean it is the best program for your child. There are so many other important factors to determine the best fit.

Any college ranking is based on criteria which are formulated in a subjective manner. The data may be objective, but any scoring metric used to produce an ordered list of schools will be subjective. Published college rankings such as US News & World Reports, are subject to much debate. I liked the treatment of this subject in “Crazy U: One Dad’s Crash Course in Getting His Kid Into College” by Andrew Ferguson.

Thanks for your help! We’ve already made our choices and she is done with her auditions, I just didn’t know there was that much of a hierarchy and what it all means. :)

Oy now that I look at the links EmsDad posted, I realize I should have never asked this question! I am sorry and if I could delete it I would. The terms “top tier” and “2nd tier” are thrown around so casually here that I thought maybe I missed something. Sorry again!

The TOP tier is the school your kid is in!

I like that, theatremomma!

Was going to say the same but you beat me to it and it is entirely true!!!

Awesome theatremomma! I am going with that. ;)
