Torn between two essays for the commonapp.

I’m an undergrad applicant for Fall 2018.

For the CommonApp, I have two essay drafts. One of these is about debating and how it has helped me grow out of mediocracy and such. The other is a much more personal essay that visits a different aspect of me, but may be a little bit of an unconventional, riskier topic. Both of these essays are in draft form, and both of them are more or less important to me.

My dilemma is about which one I should pursue. On one hand, my debating side of me is reflected in my Activities list, so it feels like I’m not showing AOs a different side of me, but on the other hand, the more personal essay feels risky and doesn’t talk about any of my achievements, its just a different insight into the person I am.

Would appreciate any help, and sorry if I come off as a bit vague, this is the best I can do without someone actually reading both essays and talking to me in person. Thank you!

Do any of your colleges require a supplemental essay? If one of these topics fits a supplemental, you could use both ideas. More senior members of the board may have more specific advice but I would make sure that whichever you choose shows your personal side. No knowing how your second topic is risky, it is hard to say if it will work. I wouldn’t worry about whether the essay covers your achievements. They have that on the rest of the app. Good luck!
