Tough Choice: Recommendation Letter Slots (Common App)

Hi Everyone!

So I currently have 3 teachers that I feel are roughly equally qualified to write me letters of recommendation (in terms of knowing me as a student and as a person). However, their styles of writing are very different.
First, there’s my AP US History teacher whom I’ve known since 10th grade and currently have for AP Euro. I also play in a symphony with him (small world). I feel like he would write a very polished, yet genuine letter and give valuable insight.

Second, there’s my AP Lang teacher from Junior Year. She thought I really excelled in her class and awarded me the Outstanding Excellence in AP Lang Award which goes to the best overall student out of her AP Lang classes that year based on quality of writing, discussion contribution, etc. She’s also been my debate advisor for the past 2 years so I feel like she has a good amount of insight.

Lastly, there’s my Arabic teacher for 10th and 11th grade. She honestly loves me as a student (and a person) and I really excelled in her classes both years. Since I plan on majoring in Int’l Affairs and Arabic Language, would it be ideal to have her write a recommendation letter? The only reason I hesitate is because English isn’t her first language (or 2nd language [French]) so I feel that although her letter will be very genuine and heartfelt it might not be as polished as my English teacher’s letter.

I asked my guidance counselor about the matter and she advised to go with my English teacher for the sophisticated writing style since the Arabic department will not see my application (?). Any thoughts/comments to help guide my decision would be awesome since I need to finalize my recommenders by this Friday for Early Decision.

Thanks!

It really depends on the schools you are applying to. Some schools may have recommendation requirements. When talking to college admissions counselors, they say that recs are to get a sense of you and how you may do on their campus from a different perspective. If you truly feel that your Arabic teacher can send in an amazing rec, go for it. Admissions counselors aren’t going to care about their grammar mistakes as long as they can understand the message. Considering your major, I would choose the Arabic teacher. It may also be beneficial to see if the school you’re applying to allows additional rec letters. Some schools only require 2, but are willing to take an extra one,

Honestly, I would do the last two for super selective schools, while the first two for less selective schools (safeties/matches)
