Basically, I have a hard choice to make. I got accepted to Berkeley and UCLA, though only as a spring admit for Berkeley. I want a career working with magazines/newspapers, but neither one of the universities offers journalism as a major -- the closest ones are mass comm. and comm. studies for Cal and UCLA, respectively.

So which UC should I attend? Which one's better for my major? I'm in for sure at Cal for the mass comm. major, while I can only apply for comm. studies at UCLA in my junior year. But the spring sem. admission at Cal is really discouraging. What should I do? How hard is it to get into the comm. studies major, by the way?

you won't know about comm studies until you apply, in the spring of your first (and/or second) year. to be successful, take as MANY of the pre-req classes as you can before you apply and do well, because there isn't any writing component to your application- it's your transcript speaking for you. how difficult it is to get in, i don't know, but it's a very very popular major and there isn't a minor for it either. i took a couple classes just for kicks (they aren't closed to non-majors, for the most part), but if you aren't the major, the upper-divs won't count for anything but units.

maybe namaste can post a bit about the daily bruin?

Thanks for the info!
Do you know where I might find a statistics page about the jobs of people who've majored in comm. studies? The UCLA career center website doesn't seem to have stuff on that...

If you are interested in journalism, UCLA is your school. The Daily Bruin is the 3rd largest circulated newspaper in Los Angeles, and is rated the best college newspaper in the country. Those that become involved with it are given MANY opportunities when graduating, including internships and jobs at some of the largest publications in the country.
