Tough decision.. help?

I applied and was accepted to cal poly slo and SUNY-ESF (state university of new York college of environmental science and forestry)

I was just wondering which one you guys think is better and which one you would attend, and why?

Thanks!

Where do you live? In CA or NY? Or another state? That might make a difference for you financially.

CA, but money isn’t an issue for either place because ESF is giving me a scholarship.

Very interesting choice you have here. Quite frankly, I had never heard of SUNY-ESF because I am in the field of business. However, your question was compelling and I love the outdoors, so I researched both school programs to see if I can give you any pointers.

First, congratulations! Both schools have excellent programs. After my cursory research, here are a few differences that may assist you in a difficult decision. Cal Poly appears to be the winner for a “hands on - learn by doing” approach that will prepare you for immediate employment in your field upon graduation. I think that the Cal Poly focus may be more oriented towards work in the field. SUNY-ESF has a bit of an advantage with research and seems to have a lot of international research connections with other institutions (again, based on cursory research). Both schools claim employment and/or enrollment in master’s programs after graduation in the 90% range. Which means that both schools will prepare you well for the future. What you have here is two rock stars in your field of choice and both can claim to be among the best.

It then comes down to where you want to live and work and the type of employment you want. Here regional influence and congregation of alumni come into play. Do you want your career to be on the East Coast, on the West Coast, or international? Do you want to work in industry, government or non-profit? It is natural to suspect that Cal Poly will be more Western States dominant and SUNY-ESF more East Coast centered. SUNY-ESF may have more international recognition, but I am not sure. Do you want your education to be in the forests of the West Coast or in NY State? Which ecosystems interest you more?

Bottomline, it is now time for you to have the schools compete for you. Call the schools and set up appointments to meet them and get a tour. This is VERY important. You must go the Cal Poly Open House in April to tour the facilities and I strongly recommend that you get on a plane and go to SUNY-ESF and meet the staff, students and view the facilities. This will give you the exact info you want to make a decision. Yes, it will cost you about $1,500 for the flight and accommodation (unless, you can get someone to put you up on campus in a dorm which I highly recommend). However, this will be one of the most important decisions of your life and you cannot choose a school sight unseen.

My son was accepted into many schools for engineering including the top UC’s and I assume that my kid would be at UCLA or UCSD right now if we had not gone to Cal Poly for the Open House. Cal Poly was not at the top of our list. However, being on campus, feeling the vibe and getting to know the surrounding area did it for us. After the campus tour, meeting professors, talking to students, touring the labs – we were blown away and the UC’s never came back into play.

Bump please

Bump bump bump

My daughter got acceptance to SLO but noticed no airport to take her home since we live in sacramento area and 4.5hrs drive. We are now waiting USC and she also accepted to Loyola Marymount for Accounting major. Loyola is 7min from LAX airport but pricey tuition. All are decent school and two safety school have been admitted.
I am not as favorable for UCB or UCLA as much only because the economy has made the classes impacted fitting some classes with 700 students.

If you were to choose between Loyola and SLO, which would you prefer?

Probably SLO because its a better school than loyola.

Also, the ESF basketball Coach contacted me and wants me to play point guard for him. Since I love basketball, I’m choosing ESF over SLO.

@agentzero93 Have you been to SUNY-ESF for an official visit? It might be good to get a feel for the campus/area. My son was accepted to Cal Poly engineering and also accepted to NYU. The NYU wrestling coach has been in contact with my son since September and is flying him out in April for an offical visit to NY to meet the team/coaches, meet with advisors in his major and see the campus. The two schools are very different so I want him to be sure he really likes NYU before committing.

No but I’m going on the 24th for a visit.

@dennisy- Choice between SLO and LMU should boil down to the fit. They’re very different environments. My D is a Junior at LMU in the Natural Sciences department and loves it. My son has been accepted at both SLO and LMU and, of the two, I think SLO would be a better fit because he was accepted to both for Computer Science and SLO has a higher recognition for the Engineering school.

Despite the beautiful, lush campus, LMU is in a mostly urban environment whereas SLO is, obviously, not. So I think school (or degree) reputation, tuition and fit all come into play when comparing the two. But both, excellent schools, when it comes down to it. For my S, both are more of safety schools admissions-wise, but they’re in his top 3-4 interest-wise because he wants the small school environment.

Bumppppppp
