Tough Decision

My future Cadet just found out that US Coast Guard accepted him as well as KP...
He is so torn right now...down to the wire decision time
Anyone out there know any CGA grads? How do you compare the two programs? Both have engineering programs etc...No Sea Year at CGA...academics X4 years instead of 3
What are your throughts? Any and all coments are welcome!

This forum is great!

Thanks

Either way it's your son's choice. I think you will find that a majority of our children were faced with the same options. Remember all these kids are high achievers and get multiple appointments. Here is a link to another forum topic here that addresses this question:

isn't it too late now, i thought 01MAY was the deadline...

I cannot speak from experience, but I work with a guy who's son is at USCGA. A few years ago it was the number one hardest school to get into. As a result, there are ALOT of bookworms there and his kid was having trouble making friends. He plays football and even then was having trouble. Now, I don't know this kid, but the story kind of makes sense. Be advised, this is just my co-worker's opinion.

At KP, the mids there are smart, but from what I've seen, very well rounded. I think it would be best to go see the schools if you haven't. Both are impressive and beautiful. It also depends on what major he wants.

Good Luck

"academics X4 years instead of 3"

thats not exactly accurate. although we technically have 3 years on campus, its 4 years worth of classes. that is why we have 3 trimesters (usually 18-21 credits), and the academic year is about 11 months long. if you count sea projects, which would be the equivalent of 1 years worth of college credits, its more like 5 years of academics packed into 4 years. if your son is absolutely certain he wants to go into the USCG, the choose cga. if not, and he has an open mind and wants some flexibility and options, choose kp. keep in mind that you can get a commission in the CG if he decides to go that route.
