Tough Family Situation + Declining Cornell Admission

I really need some ideas about a little problem I have please.

I love Cornell and was accepted +received Financial Aid + Dorm assignment and really wanted to attend but after going back home (my parents live overseas), it turns out I am going to stay in my home country for familial reasons. I have a difficult relationship with my father-in-law and he basically doesn't want to contribute at all anymore (my father passed away and my mother is unemployed).

I would like to know how I should tell Cornell about this situation. I will not be able to attend and feel terrible since I received a lot of FA and was assigned a room.

Thanks :-)

contact admisions and let them know as soon as you are sure - it happens.

A classic example of “summer melt.”

I sympathize with your situation. However, since you said that you received a lot of FA, the cost of attendance, I suspect, should not be that high. As a result, you might be able to cover your attendance at Cornell at a reasonable amount of loan. If you really want to attend, you should ponder on this option. I would talk to FA office first, and see if you can get more aid.

Worst comes worst, you should call Day Hall office and let them know that you are unable to enroll due to personal reasons. Best of luck.

They will respect your decision as long as you are up front and honest. You can ask for a 1 year deferral in case things change. Also, they are over enrolled (they did not accept more, but of those accepted many more are coming than usual) in the freshman class and in housing, so this will help another student.

And hopefully, next year, you can start at Cornell.

Thanks everyone.

I will contact them asap but I feel awful about this situation. I’m glad they over enrolled a little bit :)
