Town-Gown Relations

<p>So Williamsburg has been a city for almost 300 years, the voting age was lowered to eighteen 40 years ago, and students gained the right to vote in Williamsburg 4 years ago. Today, for the first time, a student was elected to City Council.</p>

<p>What's interesting is the magnitude by which he won, too! Virtually all students are in the Stryker district, so lots of townies voted for him too.</p>

<p>There have been issues in the past which Student Assembly presidential candidates have promised to address every year, but which saw little progress. One of the big ones was the three person rule (now, sometimes, the 4 person rule) which limits off campus housing (many believe in an arbitrary and unfair manner). Another issue is increasing "student-friendly" commercial development around the College. </p>

<p>I'm sure this will be a huge change in the dynamics of city council - hopefully for the betterment of everyone in the city.</p>

<p>I like the way Haulman said how good this is for W&M… he is one of the huge opponents of having more than 3 people rent a house and is against more rental properties nearby the school.</p>
