Transcript & math

I’m trying to skip precalculus this year to get into AP Calc BC. I’m in Algebra 2 Honors this year. I’ve asked my math teacher and she says it would not look good on my transcript because colleges want to see progression? My grade is a high 97 and I’m confident in my Math abilities so I want to skip into Ap Calc Bc next year as a sophomore. I’m pretty good at math and is my favorite subject, if I do well, how will that affect my transcript?

It shouldn’t affect your transcript, but that’s a school-specific question. Nor will colleges care when you’ve taken precalc. The bigger question is will a race through precalc in 6 or 8 weeks prepare you adequately for Calc BC? Again, a school-specific question. It’s called precalc for a reason and if you are not adequately prepared and your grades suffer, that will not look good.

What are your options for math as a junior and senior if you were to do so? And what is the reasoning to rush through the curriculum?

It is not about looking good to colleges. It is that you are likely to find calculus to be more difficult than it needs to be if you have not had precalculus, since you will have to learn the needed precalculus on your own while taking calculus. Although if you struggle in calculus after skipping precalculus and end up earning a C, D, or F grade, that will not look good to colleges.

If you take precalculus in 10th grade and calculus BC in 11th grade, you will be two grade levels ahead in math, which is plenty. Is there a local college where you can easily take more advanced math in 12th grade?

I’m planning on taking bc Calc 10th, Calc 3 Honors 11th and Ap Stats 12th. What would be the requirements for jumping into Calc, with regard to the material? Btw, I plan to major in physics or mathematics, or both.

Try these math placement tests to help you determine if you are ready to take calculus 1 or high school calculus AB or BC:
