TRANSFER ACTING BFA OR BA PROGRAMS??? HELP PLEASE

Hi, I am currently a sophomore in a ba theatre program. I don’t like and I am looking for programs that have a huge focus on acting. I don’t want to completely start over. I would like to either graduate on time or the year after.

Does anyone know of any programs that have either a 3-year program or accept transfers? I will take any advice. I really dislike the program I am in and I am looking for a way out. thank you!

Brooklyn College’s BFA program is a 3-year program. (Also very affordable!)

On another thread about transfers, someone said it’s possible to transfer to NYU’s BFA and graduate in 3 years if you’ve completed a lot of gen eds before you come.

Most BFA programs do accept transfers, but most of them make you start over as a freshman.

BU offers an accelerated track, but if I’m honest I assume most people stay for 4 years. That way you maintain the company feel with your year.

Fellow transfer by the way! Where are you doing your BA Theatre program? What don’t you like about it?

Good luck!

Hi! so I am going to a school in Connecticut (i would tell you but i am paranoid people from my school will see me hating haha) and it is a newer program still trying to figure things out. The training isn’t as serious as I would like. The staff is amazing but we only take one acting class a semester and I feel I am not learning anything. What about you? It is great to talk to someone who is in the same boat as me!

Honestly I would recommend going into a BA. I’m (hopefully) transferring this year. My story is a bit different from most. This will be my fourth year of auditioning/applying for schools. It’s never really been about getting in for me, but more about affording my education. I’ve been doing this for a LONG time, so here is what I have to say:

It’s almost impossible to transfer into a BFA as a transfer if you plan on finishing within 3-2 years. There are very few school just willing to do it, which kind of hurts us transfers. Schools I know that do offer a 3 year plan are Boston University and NYU, but this is usually only if you have almost all of your Gen Eds out of the way.

BA’s are more of an easy bet for us because they tend to be a lot more flexible in terms of accepting transfer credit, most aren’t audition based too so you save some money as far as auditions go. The following are some good schools to look into:

Brown University
Muhlenberg College
Middlebury College
Marymount Manhattan College (Auditioned program)
City College (CUNY)
University of South Florida
Rollins College

I would also say that if you plan on transferring into a BA, remember that Graduate school is a thing. Graduate school MFA’s offer the same (if not even more) intensive acting education that BFA’s offer. They are not only more affordable, but they can also even pay YOU to attend. Yeah, that’s a thing. You will also graduate with a Masters, which automatically qualifies you to work as a professor at a University if you ever need that to fall back on. It’s so underrated.

You can do it! PM me if you need any help!

thank you so much! This was very helpful and I will definitely look into that.

very much agree with @FinishingTheApp .

I’m applying for Theatre BA’s in the hopes of doing an MFA (Brown’s is completely funded!).

I’m applying to Middlebury College, Barnard College, Vassar College, Amherst, Colby, Bates, Sarah Lawrence and Hamilton.

I’m coming from the U of Edinburgh - obviously academics are going to matter a lot at BA schools so make sure you keep a good GPA! You can also send Slideroom portfolios which will be viewed by faculty. They definitely help.

Best of luck <3
