Transfer Advice - From Florida to California

Hi everyone!

My family is relocating from Miami, FL to Los Angeles, CA but I am entering my sophomore year at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. I am a Biomedical Sciences major, I want to go to medical school and be Pediatrician someday.

I emailed a few admissions counselors to review my transcript to see if I was eligible to apply and, of the ones that responded, it appears that the curriculum in Florida is very different as far as requirements go.

I want to transfer Fall 2014 (my Junior year) so that I don't have to fly 6 hours every time there is a holiday/break. Plus, california is one of my dream states. I hope to live there permanently someday.

Here is the email I got from one of the state schools:

Thank you for your interest. After evaluating your transcripts here is what we found:
Total units: 38
GPA: 3.84
Needed courses: Oral communication*, fine arts, U.S history, political science with California emphasis, health and wellness theory, and exercise class.
* indicates a required course.

What does this mean? and what should I do? Do I stay in Florida for 3 more years spending tons of money on airfare? Or can I somehow transfer?

Classes I've taken:
Chem 1, Chem 1 Lab, Bio 1, Bio 1 Lab, PreCalc, Calc 1, Intro to Psychology, Intro to Sociology, Analysis of Children's Lit, Medical Terminology.

Classes I am enrolled in for Fall 2013:
Chem 2, Chem 2 Lab, Bio 2, Bio 2 Lab, Intro to Statistics, Film (Fine art requirement).

Any help/advice/guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Check the state residency rules for Florida to see if you can keep residency, and for California to see when you can gain residency (there is likely a year waiting period, among other things).

UCs and CSUs generally take a lot of junior level transfer students, although mostly from California community colleges. You can certainly apply. But check the residency rules because they will significantly affect your costs.

You can go to a CCC and transfer to a CSU/UC/USC or private universities we have out here. It would be expensive for you if you’re not a resident. Take all the GE classes at a CCC it’ll be a lot easier for you.
