I know there are other threads on transfers but none seem to specifically speak to the question of attempting to transfer in your freshman year of college. My daughter was accepted at 6 schools academically and chose to go to a private school close to home when the theatre conservatory programs at those schools didn't come through. She wants to audition to quite a few BFA's this fall but does not know if she will need to wait in order to have college transcripts.

Does anyone have experience with this or advice?

She is also looking for an acting/monologue coach in the Central Florida area.

Do you mean that she wants to transfer to a theatre conservatory in the middle of her freshman year? Or, do you mean that she wants to audition in her freshman year to transfer to a theatre conservatory in the fall of her sophomore year?

Some schools have fall auditions for early action or early decision applicants, or sometimes simply to accomodate all of the students who want to audition for a given program. These auditions are to begin in the fall of the following year. I do not know that many schools allow transfer students to apply early action (thus getting a result on admissions for the following fall by December). So, even if she auditions in the fall she will most likely have to submit both her HS transcripts and her fall freshman grades, and would not be able to begin in the program until the following fall.

Most conservatory programs (possibly all) will not accept students in the middle of the year. Each program has different policies in terms of sophomore transfers. Some schools require the student to complete four years at their conservatory program, regardless of whether they have already completed a year of college elsewhere. Some schools will allow you to complete their program in three years, counting academic credits that you may have taken at a liberal arts school, but not accepting many of the courses which you took in the theatre major.

I know of students who have transfered into University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Montclair State in NJ, and Wagner College on Staten Island.

I believe that I have read of people on this board who have transferred to Hartt, Syracuse, BoCo, and Point Park.

One thing to be aware of. Some schools will not accept any transfer students until they have an idea of how many people will be entering the program as Freshmen, and/or how many students may be leaving the class between their Freshman and Sophomore year.

It is important to contact each school in which your D is interested directly, as each school will have completely different way of doing things. Also, be sure to contact both the admissions office and the department. Admissions may have a general policy on transfers that does not neccessarily apply to the theatre conservatory.

i was a freshman this year and auditioned this winter for transfer. PM me if you have any questions. i don't know anything about coaches in central florida, but i will be attending FSU for MT this fall :)
