Transfer Advice

I haven't started college yet, but I'm already sure I want to transfer.

I'll be attending Simmons College this fall and I want to transfer to either Smith or MHC for spring. I know it's recommended to stay the whole year, but I'm in a bit of a rush...

How high would my college GPA have to be, to be comfortable applying? How many extracurricular activities would be preferred?
Considering that they're looking at my HS GPA, extracurricular activities, and SAT, how much do they truly matter if I'm a transfer applicant?
How much would it matter if I join a couple of groups in college?
If both schools have a low percentage of latinas, how much would this help me considering I'm Puerto Rican?

I'm mostly transferring because the school is not very generous with their financial aid package; this is why I'd like to leave before I have to write them another check for spring.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I didn’t submit an ACT or SAT score. My college GPA was 3.6 in an honors program. I had a lot of extracurriculars… I think that helps a lot. If you join groups, work to get leadership positions. If that doesn’t work out, start your own meaningful club and make yourself the president. Also, get friendly with your professors so you can get some bomb recommendations. I sent in three, although they asked for two. All of them were pretty personal. I think if your GPA is above average and you are an interesting person, you will be fine. Do an interview, also. It is considered “very important.” Make sure to let them know why you are so fabulous and interesting. They will give you plenty of opportunities to. Call the admissions office with any questions you have. Make yourself known…

And let me know what you think of Simmons. I was seriously considering going there this Fall… but I chose Smith instead.

You’ll be fine, but really make SURE that you shine as soon as you get there. In fact, start getting involved right now. You are going to be filling out your application pretty soon.

Do you think I should mention my financial problems in the essay (it’s about why I’m transferring) and interview?

Other than by visiting the school, how would I “make mysel be known?”

Thanks for your help!

Any time you have a question, call them and say your name. I was anxious and i even talked to a counselor about sending in my application late. I thought that was probably going to seem weird, but I got accepted… so whatever. I wouldn’t mention your financial problems in the essay… maybe in the interview but still, I’m not sure.

Do not mention your financial problems. You don’t want the adcom to think that the ONLY reason you want to attend Smith is because you think they’ll give you more money.

Obviously, if a low income bracket has led to some situations where you’ve had to triumph against the odds, that’s a different matter for an essay. In everything, be positive. Portray yourself as an active, ambitious, likable young woman.

hey devotchka i’m also in the same boat. wish you a luck!

@ Shereenist : do you remember the topic of Smith supplemental essay?

Smith didn’t require a supplemental essay (<3)

All they wanted was your common application essay, which is a brief and general reason WHY you want to transfer that is meant to be sent to all schools (but can be altered)

They also had a little paragraph (I think it was 400 CHARACTERS or something. VERY short) that asks “why Smith?”
