I was wondering whether these schools offer any financial aid to transfer students. My EFC is around 90k and I have a sibling that’s going to be a college freshman and the cost of his school will be around 60-70k a year. I’m looking forward to transferring to these schools and also what are my chances? My gpa is probably going to be a 3.5-3.6ish by the time I apply for transfer. I’m an OOS student for all of these schools and currently I’m looking at the following schools:
University of Pittsburgh College of Business Administration
Purdue University Krannert
University of Massachusetts Isenberg
Binghamton University School of Management (in-state student)
University of Florida Fisher School of Accounting
University of Connecticut
University at Buffalo (in-state as well)
I don’t think you mean your EFC is $90k. That would put your family in a very high income bracket.
Whether the other schools have merit aid for transfers is up to each school. Check with not only the admissions/FA offices, but with the business department for any business scholarships and who is eligible. It’s pretty easy to look this up. For example, at SUNY Buffalo:
If that IS your EFC, the likelihood of you getting need based aid is zero…because $90,000 is well over the cost of attendance at these schools. And even with two in college…your EFC would be $45,000 which would be close to the COA at these schools especially if you add $6500 Loan…in other words…you don’t have financial need.
Or…do you mean that your family income is $90,000?
Even with that…really, the only guarantee you have for aid is a $6500 Direct Loan as a second year college student.
Also, could you clarify…you say you are OOS for all of the schools you listed, but then say you are instate for Buffalo and Bing.
OOS public universities will be a lot more costly than your instate public…and none of the schools listed guarantee to meet full need for all.
@thumper1 i’m pretty sure that i miscalculated my efc. it should be around 50k maybe a little more and yes i’m in-state for buffalo and bing. also i’m hoping to receive at least 3-4k in financial aid (preferably grants or scholarships). the rest will probably consist of loans.
Do you and your sibling have a known budget for university? I can’t tell from your post what you can afford to spend. If you don’t know either then I don’t understand how you can think about what schools to apply to.
Bing and Buffalo are way less because you are instate.
UConn is over $53,000 a year.
Florida is under $45,000 a year.
You can google the costs of any college by typing :the name of the college cost of attendance.
BUT if your EFC is $50,000, don’t count on getting ANY aid from any of these colleges except the Direct Loan. Your EFC is at or near the cost of attendance.
@thumper1 yes but i have a sibling that is going to college next year and tuition is going to be 60k for her and i should clarify that my efc is 50k for both of us combined
Would you please tell us how much your parents will contribute to YOUR education costs for ONE YEAR…and how much they’ll contribute towards your sister’s education costs for ONE year.
And are you saying that YOUR EFC is $25k…and your sister’s EFC is $25k? If not, please clarify
I think you are mixing up EFC, which is what the schools expect your family to pay without any aid, and what your family has calculated it CAN pay. Did you complete a FAFSA for your school this year? What was the EFC? If you have a sibling attending next year, the FAFSA EFC will be about half. All that will determine is federal aid - Pell grants, subsidized loans, work study. If your FAFSA calculated EFC is $50k, and it drops to $25k, you won’t get much federal subsidized aid.
That doesn’t mean the schools will award you the difference between their COA and your EFC. Many schools try to get you to the COA with loans, some grants, work study, but not all (especially not all public schools) can do that.
We really can’t tell you more. I looked up the availability of transfer MERIT awards at Buffalo, you need to look at the other schools on your list. We don’t know if they have 10 transfer awards or 100. We don’t know if 10 other students will apply or 100, who will have 3.5 gpa’s or who will have 4.0. We don’t know if you are a sophomore or a junior transfer.
You say you can pay $45,000 for school…is that per year?
Most colleges won’t care that your sibling is paying this amount...as that is a choice. Your FAFSA EFC will be reduced because two will be in college. But that’s it.
How does your sibling know where he will be attending college since really the only acceptances that have been sent out are for rolling admission schools.
Will your sibling be expecting need based aid also, because if so...his out of pocket costs will be less.
Is your sibling applying to colleges that guarantee to meet full need for all...because NONE of the ones on your list do this.
What are your parents saying about costs and what they can pay? I agree...your posts are confusing. If your TOTAL EFC...adding together yours and your siblings...is $50,000 then your parents have incime in the above $150,000 a year range. Is that about right? So...what are they saying they will pay???
