Hi, I just transferred to the California College of the Arts this semster and am dying to get the hell out of dodge. Currently my dream would be to attend Smith but I'm also looking at Hampshire and Mount Holyoke (if you have any other suggestions let me know).

I'm not sure how closely they examine high school records when you already have a degree and have 60+ credits already but I didn't care too much in high school so I graduated with the dismal gpa of 2.4. So I went to a CC and earned an AAS in Visual Communication in Graphic Design Cum Laude with a 3.6 gpa (someone told me they look at your progress and I went from failing 2 classes in high school to making 18 a's and 4 b's in the last 2 years). So this summer I applied to CCA and got in with a Facult Merit Award Scholarship (10 grand a year) and a Diversity Scholarship (5 grand a year).

2 internships
Outstanding student award in art 2005
winner of the visual communications art show 2005 and 2006
2nd place in the annual art show 2006
first ever recipient of the visual com scholarship
volunteered making design/art materials for non profit organizations 2005 and 2006
volunteered to run the school's Film fest that raised money for the scholarship that ultimately went to me
work-study job tutoring students in design and computers
dean's list 2004-2006
president's list 2005-2006
designed a poster for a woman's(non profit) organization.
historian of the visual communications club
killer college reccomendations (is 3 better than 2?)
worked full time for the last 2 years
i literally did every possible thing you could do at the school in the art department and even had faculty invent new positions/internships for me to join

skills:
great writer (was going to major in it till i realized my art is awesome)
fast typer (100 wpm)
recognized artist
great resume/promotional materials
excellant interviewer

diversity:
african american
lesbian
liberal
socialist
feminist
woman (not sure if any of this makes a difference, but hey, i look interesting)

high school:
softmore year softball
junior year track and yearbook
and participant in the Black History Program

I'm not sure if it helps that I'm transferring from a private art school instead of the CC that I just transferred from but I was wondering my chances of getting in? I'm willing to do the interview, resume etc...

Also I know Smith and MHC don't require you to submit your SAT results which is probably a good thing (1150) but I'd be willing to retake them if it will help, i am 100 percent confident that I would raise the score by at least 200 points. Also I could join some clubs while I'm still here for the soul purpose of applying, there are no sports here of course (art students dont sweat).

I would apply to Agnes Scott but I'm trying my best to stay out of the south as I've lived there my entire life. As far as Mills goes I just moved to the bay area and Oakland, while diverse, is quite scary.

Reed is a bit quirky...and an essay or good recs can make the difference. It is not very stats driven, so I'd say look into, if you like the college.

LOL...the lists always seem to get longer, don't they.

Hampshire is a cool school, but it is definately for people who are independent, and know what they want--shouldn't be a prob for you though.

The upside of the college is that you can take classes at MHC, Smith, Amherst, and UMass-Amherst. I'm glad you like it--it is like Evergreen State, Goddard, Marlboro, New College, and Reed.

You might like Pitzer as well...since you can take classes at the other Claremonts (e.g. Scripps, Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, and Pomona) as well as the grad school.

p.s. I can't believe I am applying to Wellesley, although I'm hoping their Media Arts & Sciences department needs a golden girl and they accept me, which is basically my only hope.

Thanks for all the information and support, but now I have a new problem:

I just transferred to a school this semster and want to transfer out for the next semester. Since I will have only earned 12 credits here and when I send my transcripts there really won't be anything in it, should I just list the college I was at for 2 years and just omit the one I am at now. It would look sort of bad if the looked at my application and see that the school gave me tons of fin aid and I am just leaving them, they might think I would do the same thing at their school (my college professor explained this to me, he used to run admissions at a university). On the other side of the coin I did get a lot of awards when I came here and that might make my application look that much better.

Nope....they'll look at all the grades already earned, as well as the ones for this semester. They'll just expect that you'll do well in each class, and have you send your semester grades once you recieve them.

Your professor is a little misguided, as most of the schools you're applying to have seperate offices for admissions and aid. It does not usually influence admissions decisions.

BTW, you would be looking at fall transfer for 2007...it's difficult to meet the October 15-Novmber 1 deadlines, unless everything is already done.

well three of the schools have a nov 1 deadline and smith is on the 15th and simmons is on dec first. My first priorit right now is to make sure that I get all of my transcripts from all three schools in, as wel as sending in the actual applications. I am confident that I can do it, I work best under pressure.
