Transfer chances from Public U

Hey Barnard CCers,

I am currently a freshman at Rutgers University, the state U. of NJ. I am part of the Honors Program and Douglass Residential College, the all-women community here at Rutgers, and I am looking to possibly transfer to Barnard.

I got a 4.0 my first semester, with 5 classes, including a feminist class and an honors class. The problem that might be obvious with Rutgers is that I did not really find my first semester all too intellectually stimulating, hence the 4.0. I am content here, but I am not sure if this is really for me.

Activities: I do work/study at a tutoring center for 10 hours a week. I am a staff writer of an arts/music magazine-newspaper here and for the Asian American Issues Newspaper, and I just got accepted as an Honors Program tutor for microeconomics, Italian, and the feminism class. I am also applying to the Institute for Women’s Leadership Scholars Program and to be a Red Pine Ambassador for Douglass College.

I was previously rejected from Barnard last year as a hs senior. Barnard was a reach for me since I was at the far end of top 10%, got a 1390/1600 on SATs (not a test-taker, also not a sat-class taker), and a 4.03 uw gpa.

But I was very active in high school: EIC of award-winning litmag, literary editor of award-winning yearbook, president of book and movie club that i co-founded, member of environmental club, and volunteered for a school period a day to help teach the special education students in my school. Other not as significant things: I’ve been playing piano for 14 years, volunteered to teach little kids Italian at community Italian club, and volunteered for non-prof organization that helped needy families pay for their childrens’ elementary education. I have been previously accepted to NYU, BU, and Syracuse, all with varying degrees of scholarships.

I should also include that I want to teach special education, so I would be interested in the Teacher’s College there. I am also looking to major in English, with a possible minor in Italian and/or women and gender studies, if I have the time (I am planning on studying abroad in Florence as well).

Please tell me what you think of my chances. And be gentle with me :)

I think you stand a very good chance. You sound very much like one of my daughter's friends who transfered. The variable that is not measurable yet is the number of first years that will matriculate. This may limit their capacity to accept transfers.

Wow - are we twins? I'm a prospective transfer from Northeastern U, I'm in the honors program, I have a 4.0, and I'm also transferring because my current school isn't proving to be very challenging. I work through work-study too, (research assistant) and I'm also a staff writer for a school paper. I currently work an organization that works with local students, and I worked with kids through high school. I mean, we've got a lot of differences, but honors, 4.0, work-study, paper, kids . . . that's weird!
I hope you have a good shot, because we are pretty similar activities and stats-wise. :) I'm super nervous about applying . . . but your stats sound great to me.
Is Barnard your first choice? Where else are you applying?
I'm sending in apps to Columbia, UNC (my hometown school and a financial safety) and D.C. schools for International Relations (some of which are less selective), all of which would be great . . . but Barnard sounds so wonderful. I never thought I'd apply to a women's college, but the combination of the intimate LAC community with the resources of the best city on Earth is just too perfect.
Agh, nervous! Good luck :)

Just wanted to briefly say that despite the name, Teachers College is a graduate school, not an undergraduate school, so you are (basically) not going to be able to take a class there while at Barnard. If you did somehow manage to (it does rarely happen) then it will cost you over $1,000 per credit per course on top of your regular Barnard fees.

thanks for the heads up. I vaguely know about the education program there; my hs english teacher was telling me about it. she said they had some sort of certification program at barnard, but i don't quite remember.

@kwolf, that's such a coincidence!

and I would only be applying to barnard and cornell, if I choose to transfer. I most likely will not due to my financial situation, but I would just like to see my chances, and if I should even bother applying.

You should definitely apply. And you might be surprised at the financial aid you are offered. Though, with the current economic times, who knows? It does not hurt to try, though, and I think your admission chances are excellent.

wow naoise, are you the second coming of mother teresa?! If you got rejected, there is no way I'm getting in.
