Hey there, I am looking at transferring to UT in the fall of 2015. I want to major in Athletic Training, so I plan on transferring to the college of education. My GPA will be in the 3.6-3.8 range with around 32 hours. I am a Texas resident attending a Texas community college. How do my chances look? I have a good amount of EC's (Eagle Scout, Boys State, etc.) and will have strong letters of rec/essays. Thanks in advance!

You should have a really good shot with your GPA. UT’s average transfer GPA is now around 3.7, although UT also does holistic review. The only question would be your choice of COE. I heard they only accept a couple of hundred transfers a year, and they look closely at essays and ECs to make sure you’re a good fit. But your ECs look really good. I also read that UT is trying to keep transfers from getting into UGS or COLA while intending to internal transfer to another school later. UGS doesn’t take transfers anymore, and COLA is looking over essays and ECs to make sure you really want to major in liberal arts. So if you went to a science magnet, have 24 hours of calculus, and your ECs are all about robotics, they may have a question about your essay on your love of Yeats and British Literature. I just transferred this Spring, so this info is from discussions with friends and from bulletin boards. You can also look at UT’s Transfer Times for more info. The 2011 edition has a breakdown of average GPAs and acceptance rates, but the info is outdated. It’s a lot harder to transfer to UT now.

@imaswann Thanks so much! My only question is do I need to have certain classes completed to be eligible to transfer? I have taken pretty basic classes this first year, but I know A&M requires certain maths and sciences to already be completed prior to transfer.

You should call UT admissions to get an official answer, but what I heard was you just need 30 hours to be considered for COE. There are not any mandatory courses as for CNS and Cockrell. But, all UT programs are competitive, so I would stick to core courses or other courses that UT admissions will respect. Once you are in COE, you have to apply to get into the athletic trainer program. The point is you have be in COE in order to take the pre-reqs. Here’s the link. Good luck, and Hook’em! <a href=“Home - College of Education - UT Austin”>Home - College of Education - UT Austin;

you’ll get in just fine.

Hello all, I am a freshman electrical engineering student at the University of Houston. I would like to attend UT austin, and I will do this by transferring. I was a weak student in high school, so I could not get in first hand. Held a 4.0 GPA first semester. Since I am in the process of completing 30 hrs, my spring grades will also factor in to the admissions decision. I seem to have a decent shot, since many of my friends transferred after first year with a decent GPA. However, here comes the problem that I am greatly concerned about. Since this was my first semester, I was trying to settle in and did not have the time to join any extracurriculars. I however, did do swimteam all four years of high school and also club swimteam. I also do not have previous work experience but do have some community service. I fear the lack of extracurriculars is really going to make a dent in my application here. Any help, tips, and chances of getting in would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone and happy holidays! Freshman done with first semester straight out of high school(2014 grad). Also, does AP credit count towards the transferrable hours? Didn’t even apply in HS

Help would be much appreciated! Also scared of transferring to cockrell externally due to competitiveness. I do want to study engineering eventually though. Second choice CNS

Having no extracurriculars wouldn’t be detrimental to admissions, especially with the GPA you have. If you have the time however, I would definitely consider joining a club or something. Also, AP credit counts, but only the credits that apply to an engineering degree would actually matter. Did you already claim the credit at UH?

Yeah I did. Do the 30 transferrable hours need to be transferrable in general or do they have to go towards your degree? Thanks! Also, if you have a 4.0 how important are essays?

I believe they can be transferable in general, except for the required classes ( Cal 1/2 and Engi. Physics). Although if you have more of the credits for ECE plan you’d finish your degree quicker.
