Transfer credit relinquishing

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if a student wanted to transfer colleges, if the school to which the student was transferring to would allow a student to relinquish all their credits from their prior university. Essentially, this would have them reclass as a freshman voluntarily.

Generally no. Previous college course work needs to be included when applying to a college. (However, those who took college courses only before high school graduation are still generally considered frosh.)

Nope. That’s not how it works. Why would you want to be reclassified as a freshman? To be able to attend that week-long freshman orientation instead of two days as a transfer? To be assured on-campus housing? If you are afraid that you wouldn’t make friends, well that depends on you and the place you transfer to. Yes at some small LACs friend groups can be pretty set by the end of the first year, but even those don’t lock new people out forever. If you attend a big state U or if you change your major or if your major requires a lot of group work or if you play a particular sport or participate in a particular EC then Depending on your major, then you will find plenty of opportunities to get to know people.

The college/university you transfer to decides whether or not any of the credits are acceptable for transfer, and what they can be applied as. If they aren’t applied the way you think they should be, if there is more than one way to apply them, or if you come in with more credits than normally are accepted, that is when you have the option to petition the college or university to apply the credits differently or to apply one group of credits instead of another.
