My son, who is a freshman at a small liberal arts college in Maine, applied for transfer to 4 colleges. He has heard from Lewis & Clark in Portland, Oregon, where a friend goes, and from Brandeis in Waltham. He is in a tizzy trying to to decide which one, since Brandeis said they want an answer in 10 days. He doesn’t like where he is because of what he says is “the culture” (meaning the types of kids…too many preppy, entitled kids plus jocks). He’s very studious and got a 3.5 GPA this year. Lewis & Clark offered some merit aid, but I am questioning whether across the country (we are in New England) is really the answer.

Here is the link to the transfer area.
But you might also want to read this specific college threads.
Both schools are really fine schools. What made your so choose them to apply? Have him think about the reasons.
Thanks thumper1.
Hey, if he wants to be with his friend, why not? He may feel more comfortable there than trying to jump into an entirely new environment at Brandeis, even if the latter is closer to home. If he’s okay with being 3,000 miles away, and Lewis & Clark is affordable, then let him go!
Make sure he knows you support whichever decision he makes . . . and then step back and trust his instincts.
Thanks dodgersmom. You make some very good points which are worth considering.
