Hi, I’m currently a freshman at RISD. However, after a month of study, I kind of feel unsure about whether I am really into art or not, which I started to feel concerned back in the days when I was deciding my ED school. When my life starts to be filled with art instead of other studies, I started to feel dread. Things just became so different for me. I guess it might be better if I just keep art as an interest instead of my actual major.
Therefore, I am wondering whether it is possible for a freshman in art school to transfer to universities, for examples, UC schools, NYU, etc.
God, I’m just being so anxious lately wondering if I ended of having no interest in my major for the future four years.
The UC’s are public colleges funded by the state and its taxpayers. They prioritize residents. They take rising junior transfers.
If you are not a resident, plan to spend $67K per year to attend. NO financial aid. You also need to meet the admissions requirements:
If you are applying to NYU, you need to meet their requirements and have a lot of cash to cover their tuition and fees. They are known for being lousy with financial aid. Assume over 100K for tuition and R&B.
You need to ask your parents what they are willing to pay and then investigate schools that fit that budget.
If you are not sure what you would like to study, you can always go to a CC and spend time in various classes to see where you have strengths or what direction you think you would like to further explore.
Thank you so much for replying! I have talked to my parents and they are okay with the fees. I am just a little bit worried that it might be harder to translate from an art school to Universities:crying_cat_face:
Maybe reapply as a freshman since I don’t think you’ll be able to meet transfer requirements coming from Art school. Or go to community college and transfer after a year or two depending on the amount of prerequisites you might already have.
ED is a bad idea for most applicants in my opinion. Good luck!
If OP is targeting UC’s, then they cannot apply as a Freshman.
@AlexaRU: You would have to see if any courses at RSID will be transferable. Your best bet would take any required courses at a community college then transfer.
Why? Is it because she has taken some college classes already? If she dropped out now could she not apply as a freshman? Not saying that you should do this OP, just clarifying what the rules are. She will have zero college credits if she drops out now (assuming she didn’t take any college credit classes in high school).
UC’s consider any student that has taken or enrolled in college courses after HS graduation (not including summer session), a transfer student even if they withdraw since there will still be a college transcript.
From the UC website: A transfer applicant is a student who has enrolled in a regular session at a college or university after high school. Students who meet this definition cannot disregard their college records and apply as freshmen.
Sorry for replying slow. For the first year in RISD, I’ll probably have 12 credits in total. Meanwhile I have 6 credits transferred from my IBDP score in high school (Literature and social science). Don’t know whether this is enough:cry:
I think I am planing to apply as a transfer instead of a freshman. I will probably have 18 transferrable credit at the end of this school year, not sure whether that’s enough…
UC’s require 60 semester/90 quarter units as the minimum for transfer so you need to be at Junior level. They also require specific courses especially GE’s to be completed prior to transfer.
Here is a link the basic requirements and then you have add in the major specific requirements for each UC campus that you may be targeting. Also will you be able to pay the $65K/year to attend with no financial aid?
Thank you so much!
The credit requirement is a bit hard to reach for the freshman year here at RISD:cry: I am not really worried about the fee though, RISD kinda charge a bit more. I’ll see what I can do this year to meet up with the requirements.
Thank you so much for replying! I think I’ll be trying to find a way to meet the transfer requirements, or maybe looking for some other possible schools that might take transfer student from art school.
It’s really hard to actually clear up my mind during ED when everything gets so consuming:cry:
Sorry you find yourself in this position. What made you apply to art school in the first place? You must love art very much. Don’t get discouraged. Enjoy your studies right now and keep your eyes peeled for new possibilities. Don’t let your misgivings paralyze you. You’re a student! My favorite job ever! I loved being a student. I did it for as long as humanely possible. Enjoy your learning years!
