Transfer from Brown to Stanford

I asked this question in the Brown forum and most of the responses were that I shouldnt think of applying, its not worth it and or Brown's CS Dept is almost at par with that at Stanford. But obviously opinion in that forum would be more biased towards Brown so I thought I ll ask this question in the Stanford forum as well.

I was accepted at Brown this year and intend to major in CS. I dont know all that much about the Brown CS program and from what I have heard, its pretty good and definitely up there with one of the best in country; However Stanford has a prestige of its own. I am definitely certain that I will go on to do an MS followed by PhD in CS and for both of them Stanford will be my number one choice so I wanted to get there for my Bachelors as well. Since I couldnt get in I thought I ll transfer from Brown to Stanford.

But the thing is that I keep on liking Brown more and more with every passing day and cant think of a concrete reason other that the Google Guys went there (and even they got there Bachelors Degrees from other places) for going to Stanford.

So I want to ask how much of a difference is there between the CS at Stanford and Brown and whether its worth even going through the transfer application process to go from Brown to Stanford and if I even have a chance of getting in at Stanford.

Stanford’s main advantage in CS, aside from being a really good department, is just the proximity to tons of start-ups and tech companies in the area that are all always looking for new CS majors. if you intend to get an MS or PhD anyway, it would probably only be important for internships.just to start - i don’t personally think they would even consider you for transfer. the people they admit almost always need very compelling reasons for transfering to stanford - about half are from community colleges and the other half (from the people i know) have really good reasons for transfering. i would say your reason doesn’t really compare.

if you like brown, just do well at brown in CS. then apply to stanford for masters or PhD later if you still want to.

The famous Randy Pausch didn’t go to Brown or anything. Nope, he didn’t become one of the best CS professors in US or anything like that. [Randy Pausch](http://pabook.libraries.psu.edu/palitmap/bios/Pausch__Randy.html)

Go to Brown and enjoy yourself. Get invested in Brown and do well rather than trying to transfer with near impossible odds. There’s always time for Stanford.
