Hello I graduated with a BSN from University and now have been working 2 years as a neuro Registered Nurse. I got into the field because I like learning about body and health but I can’t see myself doing bedside nursing for much longer.
I just don’t like the day to day work and am tired of the same routine every day. I also have no interest in becoming a Nurse Practitioner or doctor. Unfortunately when deciding on majors and picking between engineering and nursing, I chose nursing because its a flexible, stable career. Yet I still feel dissatisfied and definitely don’t have the same passion some of my colleagues have in the field.
My strengths have always been group work, my patience, and math.
So it was sad to find out that nursing had no math.
I want to work on projects and feel accomplished when something gets done. I have been looking at engineering a lot and it looks like I would have to start all over and get a second undergrad degree. What I mostly want to do is aerospace engineering which I know is very competitive. I’m also looking into mechanical and biomed engineering.
I have loans but maybe I could get some sort of scholarship, maybe being a female engineer will help with money? It doesn’t seem like the overall pay will be much different than my current position as I get paid pretty well at my job. I could always work 2 days a month while in school to help with loans. I’m also wondering how I could brush up on my math and physics skills as I haven’t taken any since high school.
Is it a bad idea to go back to school for engineering? Has anyone done it as a second degree? I’m 24 years old and I feel like I have to try or I’ll just keep wondering for the rest of my life and never know if I could do it.
