FWIW, I agree with @“aunt bea” - regardless of whether people have seen the figures or not, it is good to seriously consider the financial aspects of a college education, especially as an OOS applicant.
It is GOOD to consider the financial aspects BUT that doesn’t mean @aunt bea needs to bring it up EVERYWHERE. You’d be surprised how much media attention has been on UCs about its cost. Even people I know who aren’t transferring know
Yeah it does. It should be brought up all the time. Students come on this message board all the time asking what moves they need to make (like grades, which classes to take, etc.) to go to an OOS college, when that shouldn’t be their concern - the insane high cost that can pull you under a life time of debt should be the major concern. It needs to be emphasized, many times. Just because the handful of people you know who are transferring are aware of the cost to go to a UC, doesn’t reflect the actual large amount of students, across the whole country, who may not be aware, at all, of how much it costs to attend a UC on an OOS price tag.
Any student of computer science who intends on having a prosperous career in the current market will be pursuing a masters degree fairly early on. Masters degrees are also not often as cheap as PhDs believe it or not, so this is not the time to stack up unnecessary debt. Attend UGA. Get amazing grades, experience, and recs. And transfer to a top program elsewhere.
Unlike PhDs, masters programs care exclusively about the numbers. Whether you attended UGA or a UC would hardly factor into the equation. Once you have a masters degree, no one cares where you attended undergrad.
Thanks for all the responses guys. Yes I am aware of how expensive it is to attend a UC. I’ll just stick with UGA and do something there. Like I said, I am completely fine with graduating from UGA. I just thought that California has so many good schools to apply to and I thought I’d be missing out on an opportunity there but I’m fine with staying in Georgia for now.
