Transfer Letter of Rec?

I’m planning on transferring to some elite private colleges, and the public school I attend now is well respected. However, I feel as though I don’t fit in the environment and there are other reasons I wish to transfer (but they’re irrelevant to this post).

Anyway, I asked a professor who I have spoken to a couple of times, for a rec letter for transferring. He knows my name and is really nice to me, but doesn’t know me extremely well. My school runs on a quarter system so I have VERY limited time to develop close relationships with my professors. His reaction didn’t seem very “good”? He said I’ll think about it, ask me in a week or two. Is this an indicator that he probably won’t write me a stellar letter of rec? After all, I don’t have the top grade in the class…should I look for another professor to ask? I need 2 letters to transfer to my desired schools and I don’t have anyone else to ask (already decided to ask another professor I’m quite close with for one of the letters). What to do?

Since most professors don’t want to come off as curt and say “I don’t want to do your recommendation”, they prefer to either say they “wouldn’t provide the best representation” or “don’t feel comfortable”. I’m inclined to say that he may not want to do it, but the fact that he told you to ask him again is a slightly good sign.

I’d suggest finding an additional professor, or lab instructor if possible.
