I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I began studying English (Honors) at Delhi University last July, but I'm unsatisified with the program; I'm considering switching over to a college in the U.S. Should I apply as a transfer applicant or a first-year applicant? It'd be great if I could be considered in the first-year category, as freshmen admissions aren't as competitive as transfer admissions. Will American universities recognize and give credit for the classes I'm taking at D.U.? If they don't, can I apply in the freshman pool? Should I not complete the academic year I've begun at D.U. so that I can apply to American colleges as a freshman? In this case, could I just use the same letters of recommendations I did last year, in the Class of 2015 admissions cycle? Thanks.

Apply as a freshman because as a transfer you will have to wait until the end of sophomore year to actually become successful in your enrollment. Correct me if I’m wrong but your grades from a uni can be transferred over to the college regardless of your freshman status since they are college level. However, the difficulty in this is that the credits from DU are international. Additionally DU is not highly ranked (in fact it is near 400 place in the world?), so it is best to deliver that credits earned from there won’t be regarded in calculation of credit transfer, but your us undergrad can be unique in accepting some of them, although not likely. You can utilize the same letters of recommendation, which can be tweaked for the specific college of application. If you plan to apply during this current cycle, you will certainly have to work quite productively to turn your common app by jan 1 or even earlier for some regular decision colleges/unis.

It is not up to you to decide whether you apply as a freshman or transfer. Every college/university in the US have their own policies/interpretation of who qualifies to be a freshman or transfer applicant. You need to check with the specific colleges you intend to apply. Same thing for transfer of credits - each college/univ (some times even individual depts.) decide what transfers and what does not.

You can apply as either but it would do yu good if u apply as a transfer.
U’ll have less of competition & for transfer applicants SAT1, SAT2 are not needed by most colleges. And most important, u wont have to waste a full 1 year.

That is if he gets in. The OP has already expressed his understanding that transferring (and on top of that being an international) will make the competition much fiercer than if he were to be a freshmen applicant. I hope you look into the statistics before commencing on this.
On the topic of not requiring SAT…that’s only after a certain point and I believe that for transfers they certainly do look at SATI…if you are low on credits.

It depends on the school though. UVA requires that you provide SAT or ACT even if you are transfer and it doesn’t matter if you have finished 30 or 60 hours:http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/answers.html
True, but if OP’s credits don’t transfer he/she will be given freshman standing. So OP should first consult the US uni if the credits will transfer, and if not, then he/she should question the type of approach to be utilized for applying.
