I completed high school in 2011 and now in a University in Ghana. I however want to move to the states and study a different course. By difinition I should apply as a transfer student but because I studied an unrelated field to what I want to pursue now, I want to apply as a freshman. How does this stack against me because I may be asked to give an account of what I had been doing since graduating from high school. Truth is, I really want to be a freshman not a transfer student. Pls help me out, tnx

You need to contact EACH of the colleges and universities that you are interested in, and ask each of them whether or not you are considered a freshman or a transfer applicant. Most colleges and universities here will consider you to be a transfer if you have completed a full year of university-level studies anywhere in the world. In either case, you must provide official copies of your transcripts from your current university when you do apply.

Each college and university decides for itself whether or not to accept any of your previous coursework for credit, or for placement into higher level classes. If you are changing fields of study, you might be glad to have your earlier coursework fulfill some of your general education or distribution requirements so that you can focus on your new major field of study once you get here.
