I'm thinking applying to transfer to Tech in the upcoming Spring '10 semester. I'm currently an instate student with a 3.44 gpa and all the required courses complete for my intended program. I'm trying to get into the CS program but I've heard it can be tough to get into, and I'm wondering if my gpa is a little to low. My math/science gpa is a 4.0 currently but I didn't do to well in a few of my other required courses and got B's mostly. My question is do I have a good chance or should I look into other options?

Are you currently in GTREP or RETP?

I can’t remember what the minimum GPA is for transfer students, but if your math and science GPA is 4.0, you should be straight as that’s more important than, say, the grade you got in music appreciation.

Nah I’m not currently in retp. The min. gpa is 2.7 for instate in both normal and math/science gpa. My big worry is if my gpa in my other classes will weigh too heavy on my math/science gpa.

I don’t think it will. A 4.0 in your math and science classes is definitely a good thing for your transfer chances.

I’d say your chances are VERY VERY good. I transferred in under computer engineering (1999) and I had a 3.3 overall 3.5 math science. At the time 3.1 was considered competitive amongst cmpe transfer applicants. Call admissions up and ask them what they consider a competitive gpa for CS transfer students. If for some reason you don’t get accepted as CS, you should re-apply for something easier and once accepted switch over to CS whenever you can.

Not to disagree with the assessment, but keep in mind that Tech’s admission requirements have gone up substantially since 1999. The average SAT score is nearly 100 points higher (on a 1600 scale) over the last 10 years.

We aren’t talking about traditional acceptance.

In 1999 computer engineering and CS were considered highly competitive, requiring a minimum gpa of 3.0 for math/science and 2.7 overall.

It seems they have been removed from that list and now fall under the the general 2.7 requirement, meaning 2.7 overall and 2.7 math/science.

So in 10 yrs it’s actually easier to meet the minimum admission requirements for these respective degrees.

The only thing you have to worry about MotoQ, is that you meet the cutoff for the available transfer openings for the semester you apply. Math/science gpa is what is of most importance and it doesn’t get any better than a 4.0. You’re not in until you get an acceptance letter but it looks like you would get one. If you are Hispanic the dean might actually personally delivery the letter to your house :)
