I am an admitted transfer into the junior class and had a couple questions.

First, I was accepted as an english major, I was wondering how highly regarded the english department at UNC was.

Also, I am currently a student at the University of South Carolina, and while academics was obviously a reasoning for my decision to transfer, the student body was a large factor too. I hate the lack of artistic/creative students at USC and was wondering if UNC was a step up. I know it isn't Berkeley but I was thinking that hopefully it was a more liberal/less frat based than south carolina.

unc is pretty greek focused. theres other stuff to do, but the best (stereotyped, yet somewhat accurate) description ive ever heard is that students either party all the time or study all the time (a few both), with not much in between.

My D is a junior at South Carolina and my son is a 2008 UNC grad. The two schools are worlds apart politically, socially and academically. My D gets very frustrated at times by the highly conservative (and very closed minded) nature of many students at USC. The Greek scene at UNC is really light weight by comparison to that at USC and nowhere near as pervasive with regard to the social scene.

The English dept is well regarded with several highly renown scholars on the faculty. The creative writing program is also considered a top program. There are plenty of very bright artistic people on campus and numerous clubs and organizations that promote the arts. If you can’t find one that suits your needs, you can always start one with help from the student affairs department I believe.
