Transfer Questions

How do you computer for tranfer credits? For example, my CC's chemistry has 5 units for 1 semester, while UC Davis' equivalent for that course is 4 units in a 2 semester sequence. Is 5 the transferrable units, or it is 4+4?

Also, is UC Davis' BS in Applied Math very selective? Do I need to have a lot of extra-curriculars?

Do I have to complete my IGETC or at least complete the UC GE courses?

Does the UC see the non-transferrable units? For example, If I take volleyball (which doesn't tranfer) and fail it, will they even look at it?

bamp. err. bump.

The units per course are determined by the University you took your classes at. If your class at UCD is worth 4 credits, you enter 4 credits. If your class at CCC is worth 5 credits, you enter 5 credits.

About your major, if you have TAG you have nothing to worry about. Even so, if your GPA is above a 3.0 you are almost guaranteed to get admitted if you finished the prerequisites and IGETC will be finished by Spring.

I think you are supposed to submit all courses taken, transferable or not, but they will only consider the transferable ones for your GPA.

Yeah you have to enter all courses taken even non-transferable.

The problem is, I don’t think I could finish the IGETC (particularly the Foreign Language thing)

That’s because I didn’t take HS here, I took it from another country.

How about if I tell them I took HS somewhere, and I had learned another language equivalent to 2 years of HS proficiency?

Wait, there’s this UC GE right? If I don’t finish my IGETC, I would still have completed it. Any comments about this?

@Johnny
Yup, got it. Thanks. :)

If you speak another language you could take the Sat2 subject test in a foreign language and score within

Achieve a satisfactory score on the SAT Subject Test in languages other than English. If the test was taken before May 1995, the first score is the minimum; if the test was taken after May 1995, use the second score.

If your the country you went to High school or middle was in Foreign Language other then English.

Problem is, Filipino isn’t in the list, and majority of our classes there were in English ._.

I had Filipino language classes though (and our history and economics classes were in Filipino). From nursery til my senior year.

Would that still be okay? Dang…

I’m not sure if Tagalog would count and I know what you mean about classes in the Philippines being in English. My GF is from their and was taught both English and Tagalog at the the sametime.
Best idea is to ask your counselor and your transcript office as there going to be the ones that IGETC certify you. It should count as you can say your classes were in Tagalog or even Taglish…

@Johnny
Ah good thing to know that someone actually knows the word “Tagalog”

And yes, my Filipino class is in tagalog. During that class we are not allowed to speak taglish/ english in any form. Out of 10 classes, 2 classes are spoken in tagalog. Although the books are in English, some teachers make the effort of translating things for us if it gets too complicated.

Oh and is the IGETC a REQUIREMENT for admission, or is it only a good thing if you want to keep your choices open?

So, for the UC’s we only need the UC GE (2 english classes and so forth)+ 60 transferrable units from a CC (could be random classes that TRANSFER and count for the UC GE) + major prereqs (if the major requires you to)…am I on the right track?

Will be asking my counsellor about this. Don’t worry, I won’t be blaming you. I just want details, and relay it to my counsellor for the specific things. It’s just hard talking to a counsellor because of time restriction. :(

i messed up in high school really bad and i ended up in remedial english and math…will these remedial classes look bad when i apply? also since these classes are not transferable… they do not add up to the 60 units for uc transfer right? thanks

oh yeah I had remedial classes too. It’s for english. I don’t think they’d care though.

Another question: Do I have to finish all my lower division requirements to take my upper division classes?

There’s this class I won’t be able to take in my CC, and I saw that this class equivalent at UCD isn’t a prerequisite of any of my upper division classes. Could I just take it in another semester together with some upper div classes?

Ryan, I doubt it will have any negative impact unless you had bad grades in those classes. In which case they still would not affect your transfer GPA.

Yeah everyone assumes their is a language called Philipino. I’m part filipino so thats why I know of it too.

It’s not a requirement, but if you don’t use it your going to have to fill the lower-division breadth/general education requirements that every UC has. IGETC your able to use almost everywhere.

I’m not sure what your asking each UC as it’s own lower div, but most people just IGETC unless your applying for engineering/science/HAAS or other special programs etc. Ether way your going to need that Foreign Language completed.

If they don’t transfer to the UC’s they wont hurt you right now. For grad school I have no idea and don’t worry about messing up in HS as long as you realized your mistakes and improve yourself now.

o ok thank u guys for the help i really appreciate it…so i heard in remedial classes, even if i got an A i would still get a P for pass in my transcript

… reposted at the bottom

If your transcript can be accessed online take a look at it. If it’s a P theb I doubt they will care. It shows how much work you put in.

@Johnny:

Thanks!

Do UC’s accept partial completion of IGETC or it depends? I could complete my IGETC, aside from the Foreign Language Dept, but I hope all goes well and they credit my Tagalog.

Another question: Do I have to finish all my lower division requirements to take my upper division classes?

There’s this class I won’t be able to take in my CC, and I saw that this class equivalent at UCD isn’t a prerequisite of any of my upper division classes. Could I just take it in another semester together with some upper div classes?

o ok thank u so much…my transcript is still empty besides the classes im taking…im guessing its because its my first semester. but i also dropped a class earlier this year and im supposed to get a W…but will the grades and W show up at the end of the semester??? thanks again guys

bump…sorry guys.
