I am majoring in linguistics and will be attending (commuting) a SUNY (Stony Brook) to save money. In a year, I'd like to transfer. I had a HS gpa of around a 94 unweighted, was in the top 5% of my class, and have an SAT score of 2170. Any recommendations of schools I should look into that are competitive but not impossible ... I'm thinking McGill, U. Chicago, Cornell, and UC Berkeley (which I got into this year but am not prepared to pay for yet). Can anyone balance this list out with more reasonable schools that still have great academic caliber but more like target than reach? Oh, and I'm not in the honors program at Stony Brook because I applied 3 months after the deadline...so I'm hoping that doesn't affect my chances of admission too much...

I’ve heard UMass has a really good linguistics program.

it does, but it’s definitely safety…moreso than even stony brook. I know kids that are going and they’re way lower on the intellectual ladder. I went on college board to compare myself and my sat is off the charts.
