Transfer Student Needs Some Help or Advice

Hello everyone, I am an instate transfer student hoping to get into SDSU for the Fall 09' session and I have a couple of questions. First, let me explain my situation...I have a GPA of 2.85 (not as high as I wished) and I am going to have 4 pre-requisites done by the end of spring. Someone else on this forum told me, "to show them (admissions) that you really want it). My problem with that is I dont know what he/she meant. I dont live near SDSU, I am from San Francisco so I cant go in there...should I call/write/email? I basically want to know what my chances are to get in. Also I was wondering if there is any type of "contract" you can promise them that you will raise your GPA or forfeit your spot. Basically I need any advice anyone can give me on the best steps I should take, thank you for anyone who replies

Since I am a transfer applicant too, I have read a lot of what SDSU has said about students like us. However, correct me if I'm wrong. As always though, SDSU is always the best place to ask.

According to what I have read on websites, transfers are prioritized by completion of lower division GE, completion of lower division major prerequisites, completion of the "Golden Four", and GPA. A good thing to do is to make sure you get all of those things done with good grades before transferring. For Fall '09, completion of classes during Spring '09 is accepted, but I don't know whether this delays anything because transcripts would have to be sent and verified later when compared to those who complete everything by Fall '08.

As far as your GPA, it is always good to get it as high as possible because it always makes it less of an issue. However, websites from SDSU just point out that GPA has to be above the requirement/minimum for the major you intend to be in.

Since you live so far away, I do not know of ways to sound interested. In fact, I had not heard of this sort of advice before. That's not to say the tip is no good, though. Maybe someone was on to something. If anything, emailing and calling counselors/admissions would be my best guess.

As far as I know, there is no contract between student and SDSU besides the fact that you promise to at least maintain the GPA you submitted in your supplemental application. If you should get accepted, there may be more details over this, but I am not sure to tell you the truth. At best, use the advice from the last paragraph and contact SDSU about this.

Sorry for the length. Good luck!

ohh ya dont worry, the length is better lol....well I intend to do business and the req. GPA is 2.9 I have a 2.84 also I wouldnt be admitted into the major program right away because there are around 8 prereqs and I will only have for so it will be another semester b4 I will be admitted into the major...I was hoping I can get into the school, raise my gpa this semester and next then get into the major program...thanks psycho78 for the help, it is really appreciated!

Don't be afraid to call or email SDSU. They are very friendly and helpful. I emailed the counselors and advisers last Fall about my GPA and preq's and I got a quick response from them. They may not always say something positive, they just are straight forward. You'll be okay.

And, honestly, I had classmates who got accepted to SDSU for Fall '08 (from Santa Barbara) with a major in business and one had a 2.72 and the other guy had a 3.1. So, I don't know...I think it's just based on how many GE courses you have completed.

Call them or email them.

Grassymeadow,

Wow that is a nice shot of optimism that I needed. At first I thought that I had no chance getting in, but after reading some facts online I am feeling OK about this. I have emailed the admissions office about an hr ago (thanks to your advice) hopefully I will hear something back from them by tomorrow,

thank you again

Just heard back from Admissions offices, I wrote,

"I am inquiring on my chances to >get admitted into SDSU.>>I am an in state transfer student and I applied within the 1st week >I was able too.>>My GPA is a 2.84 (not as high as I would have liked it to be)>>I have applied for the business Major>>I will have 77 transferable units by the end of spring semester>>I am going to have 4 of my prerequisites done by the end of spring, >(accounting, econonmics, calculus, and statistics)>>Any help or information will be very helpful to me, My admission >status is pending right now and I would really love some more >information, thank you"

They responded,

"Robert, Business Administration requires students to have at least a 2.90 GPA. If you do not have the minimum GPA, unfortunately you will not be offered admission even if all other requirements have been met. We anticipate all admissions decisions will be made by March 1st."

Not very good new for me...

Did they tell you/have you asked whether they take into account your GPA at the end of Spring '09?

If they accept classes completed this semester, they should accept and calculate the GPA that comes as a result. I would suggest you try to get A's on those courses to get your GPA as high as possible. I don't know whether this will pull your GPA over 2.9. If not SDSU, another school would want you to get those A's.

Good luck.

Dang, I'm sorry. That was interesting how my classmate (2.72 gpa) got in. Well, just hang in there. I'm sure there are other good schools willing to take you in.

Was your friend admitted into the major or as pre-business?

Yes I did email them again and I said this,

"Ok I was thinking that since I didnt have all the pre requisites done that I may be able to raise my GPA then get into the major program that way...but if I dont have a 2.9 overall on my suplimental application there is no chance for me to get in? thank you"

this is there answer

"Robert, Yes, unfortunately if your GPA is not a 2.9 at the time you apply, then you will not be offered admission."

Ya I wonder how your friend got in?

CHICO STATE HERE I COME LOL.....

I am taking 22 units (all academic units) this semester so I will bring my GPA to around a 3.2 if I get all A's

what do you guys know about getting in during spring session?

SDSU doesn't accept spring semester transfers. :/ I was going to apply last summer for this current spring semester since I had completed everything I needed to, but they weren't accepting applications. I emailed them and it is partially because there are so many applicants and because of the budget cuts.

Ok thank you....I am hopefully thinking the person didnt know what they were talking about and I will still get in...I will let you guys no whether I get in or not

thanks again

do you have to have all your pre-reqs done before going into SDSU as transfer?

You have to have at least 60 transferable units to transfer. Also, your GPA has to be at least the minimum for the major you declared on your application.

As far as prerequisites, you should have lower division courses completed before you are admitted into the major. If you applied for the Fall semester, I believe that courses for the Spring are accepted.

I am not sure whether there is an option where you can be admitted to the university but not into the major. If this does happen, you would be considered a part of the lower division. The next best thing would be to apply either way. If you have at least 60 units, you can enroll into upper division GE courses through cross-enrollment, but it's too late for that this semester.

The best thing to do is go to your college's transfer center, if you have one, or sit down with a counselor.
