Hello , i am an indian who has completed his class 12 scoring an aggregate of 92% in cbse exams. I did not know much about the colleges in the US and abroad. So i didn't take the SAT and kept preparing for the indian entrance exams and was unable to perform very well there.
But i got into vit and manipal and bits dubai is also an option.
Now should i join one of the above colleges and apply as a transfer student??
Or shall i drop a year and prepare well for the sat??
I don't have any noticeable extracurriculars but i have achieved all india ranks 96 and 40 in NSO (national science olympiad) in 2008 & 2009 . respectively.. i have a few other academic achievements but none of them are as good as the above two..
i have also applied to nus , ntu and hkust.. what are my chances there??

Hey!
I am EXACTLY in the same position as you.
I’m dropping an year btw.
They say that competition is very stiff in the case of transfer applicants.
Btw, if you haven’t given SAT yet, how did you apply to NUS, NTU and HKUST?
They require SAT, right?

No , SAT is not necessary for these universities. They see your board marks , extra curriculars and other academic achievements. A 95 in boards would have put me in a much better position but i got 92 , so the chances are very slim.

I have a friend who made SUTD last year with 92%.
What all do you have for your ECs?

A few school level debates , plays etc but nothing too good… :(

Honestly, given your extra-curricular status, I’d say, don’t drop a year. Pick anyone of the colleges that you’ve mentioned (VIT, imo, is the clear winner).
However, you need to evaluate whether you want to study only engineering or are you open to trying something else? If that is the case, then you definitely can look at colleges elsewhere (hint: SMU, Singapore) — I’m not promoting it or anything, but we do have an Information Systems Major which imo is pretty good. You may want to look into that. But then again, given the lack of extra-curriculars, it is probably a crapshoot.

Also, I hope you do know, that you can gain international exposure (if that’s the intention) by applying abroad for internships, summer schools, etc. That’ll save your parents A LOT of cash and will give you what you desire (if that is your ulterior intention).

Good luck with the decision making! I know it can be hard, but you sound like a smart person, so you should be fine! :)

Thank you for the reply , but i got accepted at the University Of Melbourne (forgot to mention that i had applied there too). So I am probably headed to Australia now.
:)

Ah, that’s pretty good! Congratulations and good luck! :)
