Transfer student scholarships must less than First-year student scholarships?

My daughter was accepted last year, with a $15k scholarship. She decided to go to another college, but is now looking to transfer back to UVM as a sophomore. Just noticed on UVM website that the max offered to Transfer students is $7k. Is that true? Can any recent transfer students confirm or deny?

$15k off of an expensive school like UVM was a borderline decision last year. Only getting $7k off of the total package this year may make that decision more difficult. Bummed if this is true!

Thanks!

I don’t know specifics for UVM, but on average, especially public schools, transfer students get little scholarship money.

Hi scholarships are offered to incoming 1st years to entice them to attend the school. This is done to bring in some of the brightest students out there, they do this also to raise their incoming 1st year students stats for US News and other college rating firms. They want to get students with high GPAs, SAT, ACT scores to boost their numbers…only students who matriculate in the fall are counted. This is why some students who are good solid student but slightly below the average class stats are admitted to the Spring Semester (their stats as incoming freshmen in the spring aren’t counted) and students who transfer are not counted either (Northeastern University is famous for this with their NU-IN program with freshmen spring admits, as well as many other schools …Cornell, UVM, etc) and transfer students stats don’t count either…therefore their is less incentive for Universities to offer large scholarships to academically accomplished transfer students. This is also why I also told all 3 of children I don’t mind you changing you major in the school (all accepted with significant scholarships to various universities) they attend but I strongly discouraged them from even considering changing schools as an option (as they would lose scholarships) unless it is a serious issue. Hope that helps
