Transfer student to UC. Help!?

So basically I messed up and my application got pulled so I've gotta scramble over these next 2 weeks to get applications in to some schools (UCs). On top of this I have to prepare for finals which is in 3 weeks!

Backstory: I went to SFSU for a year and a half and left to go back home. I only did GE courses for the 3 semesters (43 units) I attended and got an average GPA of 3.49

I took a semester off and am currently in the middle off a semester at a local California Community College. By fall 2014 I will have done 30 units at the CC.

I was initially going to transfer into the local CSU but now that my app got pulled I'm considering trying to take advantage of the priority that California CC students get w/ the UCs.

I am set to get a ~3.75 - 4.00 this semester so my average of 3.49 should increase slightly.

I have already scheduled an appointment w/ the counselor at the CC I go to. I asked her if I qualify for the TAG (Transfer Agreement) Program; she said that the minimum amount of units is 30 but she wasn't very clear.

I'm pretty set on trying to get into either UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UC Davis. Considering the info I've provided, am I aiming too high? Do I have any chance of getting into any of these schools?

Also, will I be considered a CC or CSU transfer in the eyes of the UC admission staffs? I am especially worried about this considering CSU --> UC transfers are very rare, especially with the grades that I have and the schools I'm aiming to get into.

Thanks in advance.

I’m pretty sure you already missed this year’s TAG deadline… it was due back in September I think? Also, applications are due November 30, so if you plan to apply you should do that soon. But for TAG you’re expected to be a sophomore when you apply, so you should have 30+ units completed during application time.

If you’re currently a CCC student, that’s how admissions will see you. Plenty of students go to a university for a year, decide it’s not the right school for them, and go for the CC/transfer route.

Just generally speaking 3.5 is a little low for Berkeley and UCLA, but it completely depends on your major. The average admitted transfer GPA for both those UC’s is upwards of 3.7. You also didn’t mention anything regarding completion of your major pre-reqs which is critical. Your lower division major preparation, next to GPA, is the most significant thing in determining admission for the UC’s. Assuming you’ve completed a majority of your major pre-reqs and assuming your SFSU units are all transferable (typically a huge variable for transfers from previous four year universities) your chances of getting in to UC Davis would be favorable. Berkeley and UCLA aren’t very likely unless the major you applied to isn’t very competitive. There typically aren’t that many of them though.

I am a Econ major and I should have all my lower division major pre-reqs completed by the Fall 2014 term. I have already completed all besides another semester of Calculus which I will be taking in the Spring & a semester of Statistics. I don’t know if my CC offers the intermediate Macro/Micro analysis courses though.

UC Berkley & UCLA would be my reach schools. UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara will be my match schools. SJSU will be my safety school.

Economics at UCLA is one of the most competitive majors, if not the most competitive major annually for transfers. The major is impacted and the average admitted GPA for last year’s class was 3.91, so you can probably guess what your chances would be. Berkeley is very similarly competitive for Economics and usually has a higher average transfer GPA than UCLA for their College of L&S but they don’t release individual major admission stats.

In terms of pre-reqs you should know that your pre-reqs should be completed by the end of spring 2014 if you’re applying for admission for Fall 2014. This is because any pre-reqs taken in summer won’t be consider for admission purposes. They’ll count if you take them, but they won’t be considered for your admission decision.

Based on your stats your chances seem pretty good for the schools you listed not named UCLA/Berkeley. Bear in mind though one common hang up for transfers with previous credit from four year universities is, more often than not, all of their units don’t always transfers to the UC’s. It’s one of the reasons why transfers from four year universities have lower admission rates and also applies to those that go from a four year university back to community college also.

I’m feeling relatively more optimistic about my situation now so thanks a bunch. Its pretty clear that UC Berkely & UCLA is out of my league. I’d be more than happy if I can get into UC Davis. #39 isn’t so bad hehe

I’ll have to call the various schools this week to see which courses from SFSU will transfer over.
