Hi, I just graduated from High School. I applied to NYU this year but sadly, did not get in. Instead, I am now going to the University of Miami. It's free for me because my dad works for the medical school anyways. I was wondering what the process, statistics, chances, etc. was for transferring after freshman year for sophomore year to NYU. NYC is where my heart is and I love NYU. I would love to be able to study there for my sophomore year. I am not even sure when the applying for transferring begin. Many say it is easier to get into college by transferring but is that true with NYU? I would most probably apply to the College of Arts and Sciences, btw.

There’s a little info available at <a href=“Research with Human Subjects”>Research with Human Subjects; in section “D. TRANSFER ADMISSION” but it probably won’t be much help. I’d guess that you’ll have to do better at U of M than you did in HS in order to gain transfer admission.

Arod,

If you transfer with less than 60 credits, colleges will review your application the same way they would an incoming freshmen i.e. SAT scores and highschool transcripts. If you transfer with 60 plus credits, your SAT scores and highschool transcripts don’t generally hold any negative weight against you.

Personally, i think your better off applying as a junior, especially since the UM tution is nonexistent. You’ll still end up with the NYU degree and credentials but without the extra debt.

Good luck

I was more or less mediocre in high school: 4.0+ GPA (top 20 of my class or something), but zero extracurriculars, mediocre SAT scores, zero subject tests, and only one AP class. I transferred to a community college and graduated with an A.S. degree. There, I maintained a 4.0, got involved with some extracurricular activities (but still not many), got good letters, and spent a lot of time (relatively speaking) on my essays. I was accepted.

I don’t know the statistics, but I think you should be less concerned with “How hard is it to get in?” and more concerned with “What do I need to do to maximize my chances?” The latter question will benefit you regardless of whether you get accepted.

I was wondering if the choice of classes mattered? I am undecided and so I am taking many different classes to see what it is I gravitate towards so that I can choose a major for sophomore year. I am taking Math, Art History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Next semester, I am taking an English class (I placed out of the English class for first semester because of my ACT score) and probably a science class 2nd semester as well, because pre-med could be an option for me.

If I get straight A’s, do the classes I take matter? I know online it says that most transferees are in liberal arts courses but that’s all it pretty much says.

Grades matter more than course content, generally speaking. Unless your family’s loaded I would highly suggest staying at UMiami for another year. If NYC is “where your home is,” you’ll have plenty of time to live there as a graduate - it’s not worth 55k+ for a year.
